Wan, K. S., Liu, C. K., Lee, W. K., Ko, M. C., & Huang, C. S. (2016, November). Cranberries for preventing recurrent urinary tract infections in uncircumcised boys [Abstract]. Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine, 22(6), 20–23

I started out thinking that I’d take the easy road and make the Cranberry Spritzer out of unsweetened cranberry juice, so I started calling around to stores to find some. There’s a lot of cranberry sauce variation out there, so feel free to modify/add in as you please. Some other great options would be to add spices like cinnamon and cloves, texture with chopped nuts, or some extra orange zest to really amp up that citrus flavor. Each 8oz glass is equal to 1 cup of fruit. The USDA MyPlate recommends a daily intake of 2 cups of fruit for a 2,000 calorie diet. Vitamin C is important for immunity, [particularly] during and after intense physical exercise, according to a Cochrane review,’ says Hobson. ‘Vitamin C helps to suppress the activation of viral genes, which protects against colds, and also mops up inflammatory chemicals, which may help to improve symptoms.’ 13. Cranberry juice protects brain health Even if cranberries aren’t a food that has loads of pesticides on them (for example, strawberries are MUCH worse in terms of pesticide content), it’s can still be a good idea to avoid pesticides whenever possible. Plus when I tried to avoid sugar by purchasing a “fruit-sweetened” cranberry juice, the other fruits that were used to sweeten the drink were apples and other berries, which are all fruits known to have quite a few pesticides on them–and they were not organic.

As always, I tried to keep things as fuss-free as possible. You can keep this cranberry sauce simple and sweet, or try some of the optional add-ins for a spiced variation! All you’ll need is: Cranberry juice from cold-press juicers can be stored in the fridge for days to come - cold-press juicers don't mix the air into the juice, and the juice lasts longer. This cranberry juice from Georgia’s Natural is also just simply made from organic cranberry juice. There are 14g of total sugar per serving and 0g of added sugar per serving of this cranberry juice. I also love the fact that this cranberry juice is cold-pressed and never made from concentrate. Add sugar to taste, if you choose. I'd suggest around 1 3/4 cup for tart juice, or up to 3 1/2 cups for sweet juice. Omit the sugar for sugar free juice. Stir to dissolve the sugar, but don't overcook (or it'll become jelly). If you’re not familiar with canning, I’d suggest you read my beginners guide to water bath canning before you get started.

Ways to Preserve Cranberries

To can plain cranberry juice (without added sugar), you’ll need to first extract the juice from fresh (or frozen) cranberries. Cranberry juice contains high molecular weight materials (NDM). In a test tube study, researchers found that NDMs interfere with the life cycle of the flu virus by preventing it from attaching itself to cells. In addition, cranberry juice is also high in vitamin C, which is essential for an effective immune system. Consider organic options: Organic cranberry juice is made from cranberries that are grown without the use of pesticides or other harmful chemicals, making it a healthier option. When compared with other berries, raw cranberries are very dry and hard fruits, with not much juice. Cranberries may help to ward off type 2 diabetes due to their high polyphenol content – including quercitin, procyanadins and anthocyanins. ‘A study published in the Journal of Nutrition suggests that drinking 240ml of cranberry juice twice a day could reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease,’ says Hobson. ‘The polyphenols found in cranberry juice were thought to help protect cells from damage and disease.’ 12. Cranberry juice may reduce flu virus severity
