It occurred to me that the focus row in Civilization: A New Dawn is perfect for operating a programmed opponent, and thus, the idea for the Automated Player was born! Age of Empires III: The Age of Discovery is a worthy way to wrap up this list. This civilization board game enjoyed critical acclaim and was reviewed more than 10,000 times on BoardGameGeek, not least owing to the popularity of the video game franchise. Be careful, though, because you do not want to give your opponents too much of a leg-up. Terra Mystica is fit for 2-5 players and is a game that has not only stood the test of time but is very well one of the best at what it does. Then, for each army on your military card, you may place that army in a space containing one of your cities.

If you made it this far and played the base game, you probably have some questions about the pacing or quality of life. These were also my concerns when I read about the many changes. This new reality sparked a discussion in the Fantasy Flight Games “digital office” about which of our non-cooperative games might be best suited to being played solo! Since I had recently designed the upcoming Terra Incognita expansion, Civilization: A New Dawn came to mind quite naturally. Terra Mystica is an interesting but worthwhile addition to our list. It’s by far one of the best civilization board games, drawing on the theme heavily, but spinning it in its own unique way for even better results. Players will seek to establish control over swathes of land, advance technologies as one of the many fantastic factions and join cults to solidify their power. When resolving a focus card, if you have a diplomacy card from a city-state of that focus card's type, resolve it as though it is 1 slot farther to the right. The main mechanism that diverts Civ: A New Dawn from its forebears is the Focus Row. Five action cards occupy five numbered slots (1-5) in front of each player. On their turn, a player will select a card to activate with the card’s action modified either by the number of the slot or by the terrain type associated with the slot. For example, activating a Science card yields 1 to 5 points of advances in technology. Activating an Economy card allows a player to move a trade caravan as long as they are of certain terrain types that match the action card’s slot or lower. The action card “Focus Row” shows a single card for each action. The power level of the action is indicated by the slot from the bar above the cards. Even without this expansion, though, Civilization: A New Dawn is a complete civilization board game all on its own and makes for a fun and rewarding experience across the board.

Straight out of the box, the components and artwork stays true to Sid Meier with that old school feel but with fresh revamps in places. With a mixture of plastic tokens as well as cardboard ones, it’s a nice balance and looks pleasing once set-up. Be warned though, invest in some plastic grip seal bags to keep the tokens separate as only a few are provided in the box and it helps with faster setup times. Advance your tech dial a number of spaces equal to this slot's number, plus 1 for each type of resource you have (including resources on natural wonder tokens). Designing board games is a challenging business. It has the same risk as movie production, albeit at a dramatically smaller scale. However, the need to meet the demands of a taste-specific audience while also attracting a larger audience is still at the core of some types of game design, especially when dealing with an existing piece of intellectual property (IP). A player’s turn consists of choosing a card from their focus row and resolving its effect. Play then moves on to the next player. The five cards act as follows: When a player’s tech dial reaches or passes a Roman numeral, they immediately choose a card from their supply of focus cards in that level. This new card will replace the focus card of the same type currently in a player’s focus row.Underneath each slot is a Focus Card, each one representing a different element of your people's development: This game feels like its more of a introduction to the series to help entice new players in with a more slimmed down and fluid playing experience, but at the same time could alienate true fans of the core game style.

Players who are doing well in the game will often have multiple cards with Trade Goods on them.

Playing the game for the first time with three people took about two hours and we didn’t even know two hours passed because we were so engaged with the experience.
