The 270 and 270wi have sturdy metal portafilter forks. They are fully adjustable and don’t need to be removed to accommodate your portafilter or grind bin. While the 30’s plastic forks get the job done, the 270 models’ metal forks are more durable, easier to use and give the machine a more premium look. Dosing Settings There are some other quite nice details on the grinder. For instance, the oversized grounds bin is made out of a very nice plastic material similar to the latest generation of the AeroPress. There’s just something nice about using it.

Without getting into too much detail (we covered a lot more in our 2016 review of the Breville grinder) (ed.note: We rewrote the Smart Grinder Pro review from the ground up in late 2023. It can be found here), the Smart Grinder Pro’s control and timers are almost on steroids. It has a 1/5th second digital timer (0.2sec resolution), but the timer is also “hooked into” the grind selection you do, so it remembers four different timer settings for you, for espresso, drip, “perc” (also Chemex coarse) and press pot. See, both grinders work very well with having the same design and grinding technology; that’s why it’s a bit tough to choose one between the Sette 30 and Sette 270.Now, some of their features are compared by their name only; the Sette 30 has only 30 grind settings, the Sette 270 has 270 grind settings and the Sette 270Wi has 270 grind settings with weight grinding and intelligence. This powerful grinder runs on the same AP 40mm steel conical burrs that sit inside the more expensive Sette models. 31 stepped grind setting adjustments allow you to grind your coffee for espresso or finer filter coffee methods (Aeropress, Hario V60). It has a built-in Acaia Scale, which automatically decides the instructed weight and it actually works pretty handsomely. All the Sette grinders share the same 40 mm “S1” conical steel burrs made by the Swiss burr manufacturer Etzinger.

So, what are your thoughts about Baratza Sette 30? To me, it’s a pretty good grinder at its price point. Even though there are some flaws, its features are not available even with some double and triple fold price grinders. The 30’s portafilter arms are made of plastic and can only adjust to two positions. Removing the plastic arms from the 30 and rotating them 90 degrees allows you to switch from holding the portafilter to the coffee ground bin. The remaining 3 buttons of Sette 270 are preset buttons with a green LED indicator next to them, where you can save predetermined grind time for your favorite beverages. The grind consistency is the most considerable matter, but who would like an ugly grinder? Thankfully, the Baratza Sette 30 comes with a beautiful design. Its name Sette means seven in Italian words, so all the Baratza Sette series models have the ‘7’ shapes. On the side of most coffee grinders is a chute. However, the Sette’s “7” shape means that the grounds can fall straight from the burrs to the portafilter or grounds bin, preventing retention.

You’re mainly into drip coffee — A dedicated espresso grinder is always more expensive, so if you’re only brewing by manual methods, you can get an excellent grinder for a lot less. The OXO Brew conical burr grinder is one such affordable option, and it produces a grind quality suitable for pour-over, French press, and even cold brew with remarkable consistency. In the Kruve, for espresso, fines are defined as under 250um; under 400um for siphon grind; and under 500um for Chemex.

As expected for a Baratza grinder, the overall grind consistency on the Baratza Sette 30 is excellent, especially for fine grind settings. It has the same high-quality burrs as its older brother, the Sette 270, producing excellent fluffy and consistent grinds. As noted above, the grind consistency does fall as the grind size gets coarser. The reason for this is that this grinder uses an AP (All Purpose) or S1 burr set from Etzinger, which is aimed for espresso. So consequently, it is now well documented that this is not particularly good if a coarser grind setting will be your mainstay. However, Baratza has now brought out a new BG or S2 burr set, which can be easily inserted into the Sette range and aimed at the coarser grind settings. However, Baratza has given some grinding tips for some of the famous brewing methods that we’ve mentioned below for the Sette series. Brew Method

The Sette 30 offers impressive performance here and is right up there with the best in the business at about half a gram. The grind quality into the portafilter is clump-free and evenly distributed with little to no spill. How Does The Sette 30 AP Compare To Other Grinders? Sette grinders are marketed as espresso grinders, but with enough range to take on manual brewing methods. They are more versatile than the more expensive Baratza Forte grinder. The stripped-down Sette 30 offers a budget option, with only 30 grind settings. The 270 and 270Wi both have the same inner workings, but the 270 grinds by time, whereas the Sette 270Wi grinds by weight – for which you can expect a jump in price. Sette 270 Wi :This is the top-end model with weight-based dosing instead of time-based dosing. This model will give you the same amount of coffee every time due to its built-in scale. The Wi is intelligent (hence the ‘i’). It will gradually get more precise every time you run a particular bean through it. The first time the scale might be 0,3 grams off, but the second or third time, there’s a good chance you’ll have the perfect dose in your portafilter. However, compared to many hand grinders and other entry-level espresso grinders, I do think you get good flavors out of the Sette. In addition, shots are rarely astringent, which can be a significant issue with cheaper espresso grinders.
