About this deal

Pip and Squeak Bellerophon: two children who are temporarily driving a taxi while their father is ill. Moxie Mallahan is an aspiring journalist who lives in a lighthouse with her father. She longs to move to the city to be with her mother, who works at the local newspaper.

Count Olaf says this in the second episode. This is a reference to the title of the second book in the All the Wrong Questions series which is titled When Did You See Her Last? The missing person in that book is a chemist named Chloe Knight, famous for developing invisible ink. Undisclosed Funds: The Bombinating Beast statue is described as being worth "upwards of a great deal of money". Moxie Mallahan: a child and aspiring journalist living in Stain'd-by-the-Sea after her mother abandoned her. A companion book, File Under: 13 Suspicious Incidents— a collection of short mystery stories — was released April 1, 2014.

Handler once again creates very lovable and memorable characters, this time in the equally memorable location, Stain'd by the Sea.

Dying Town: Stain'd-by-the-Sea, whose main export, ink, is running out. Already the town newspaper and telegraph have closed, and other businesses like the taxi and cafe have to make do on bartering instead of money. It is explained in the book that when the Bombinating Beast swims, it looks like a question mark, most likely referring to The Great Unknown in The Grim Grotto. Doctor Flammarion and Nurse Dander: associates of Hangfire, employees at the Colophon Clinic and apothecaries to the Knight family. Only Sane Man: Dashiell Qwerty, and to a lesser extent Prosper Lost. are the only adults to avert Adults Are Useless on occasion. The books also draw on similar themes as A Series of Unfortunate Events, such as the criticism of authority and abuse of power, the inherent complexity of the world, and the call to think more deeply about moral quandaries.

While it ends about a decade (if not longer) before A Series of Unfortunate Events begins, a few characters who will become prominent in that are present or at least mentioned here. The ending also suggests what might have been the ultimate fate of Fiona and the Quagmire kids. (Unless Hangfire or one of his associates made a giant submarine in the Bombinating Beast's likeness...) Methinks Gifford and Ghede are the two corrupt judges - "the man with a beard but no hair" and "the woman with hair but no beard" - who sentence the Baudelaires unjustly at the end of The Penultimate Peril. Half-Identical Twins: In 13 Suspicious Incidents, the Cozy twins look alike enough to be mistaken for each other despite being different sexes.Stanza 1/7, sent on 3 October 2012, included the first image below. It reads, " The ink has begun to fade from the sea, / The coffee is starting to sour; / But the question that troubles all business in town is / Who could that be at this hour?" Our last visit to Stain'd on the Sea, with its drained sea, its seaweed forest and its dwindling population, and the climax of the series' various overarching mysteries. Who is Hangfire? What is the Bombinating Beast? What is the song Ellington Feint keeps playing through her music box?

Corrupt Corporate Executive: Although a side character, Cleo's father comes across as one, as his efforts to find more Ink for his factory by draining octopi ravage the environment, cause the factory to be dependent on a source which will eventually run out and ruins countless local jobs. It's somewhat mitigated by the implications that the decision was driven by incompetence and desperation, rather than simple greed and callousness, but he remains a negatively portrayed character. Qwerty smiled, but it was sad around the edges. "No," he said. "It's a matter of handcuffs," and then the police arrived.Parental Favoritism: Sharon Haines. is so desperate to get her daughter out of Hangfire's grasp that she's willing to sell out her son to him. LS illegally gets onto a train called 'The Thistle Of The Valley'. He does this because this is the train that is transporting prisoners from Stain'd-by-the-Sea to the city. While waiting for Mrs. Sallis, Lemony reads about a young silversmith who burned his hand and took an interest in local politics.
