Nature’s embrace When painting the details or intricate areas, make sure the paint doesn’t form blobs or accumulate in areas. Bannisters are so much more than functional aspects of your staircase. They elevate your aesthetics whilst ensuring your safety at the same time.

When I was trying to name this post, I couldn’t figure out if it should be named painting handrails or the banister or …. ? I use them interchangeably because I’ve never really been sure what the difference is. But after researching a bit, I found that stair handrails and banisters are pretty much the same thing. They describe the railing that’s a part of a staircase. BUT handrails are anywhere – bathrooms, showers, etc and banisters are only in staircases. You may be looking at painted stairs ideas where you match the banister with the stairs or just the tread. In the end the choice is yours. Can you paint over stained or varnished wood? This depends on how much use it is likely to get. If your banister is in a high traffic area and it going to get a lot of hands on it, especially little dirty hands, then you want a hard wearing satin or gloss paint such as Dulux Trade Satinwood Let the first coat dry and apply a second. If you’re covering a dark colour with a light colour, you might have to apply a third coat. Picture a stainless steel railing, curving gracefully like a coiled snake as it guides you from one floor to the next. (Or, just look at our example image above). Pair it with a futuristic glass panel for a sci-fi touch, creating a striking contrast between classic and contemporary. Glass banister ideas: Embrace transparencyLike all painting projects, proper preparation and the correct paint is everything. It’s also important to protect your respiratory health during and after painting. You can do this by wearing a painting mask and selecting paints with little to no volatile organic compound content. Consider an artfully carved wooden railing, reminiscent of a well-worn library handrail that’s supported countless adventures. Adorn it with charming bookshelf accents that tantalise your imagination with every step.

If you know which material you want to use, then you can calculate the cost of your specific new banister and spindles, including the materials and labour. Let’s start with the materials and assume you have an average UK staircase of 4m from bottom to top. Then, sand the spindles. If they’re in good condition with no peeling paint, use fine sandpaper to go over the surface roughly. If the paint is damaged, use a flat scraper to peel and remove the sections of damaged paint first. Then, use medium-grit sandpaper to sand down to the bare wood. A dark floor paired with ivory white walls and ceilings helps to create the illusion of a bigger space. The stark contrast between the two tones helps to set them further apart, like an optical illusion. This hallway flooring idea paired with the white paint also helps to create an effortlessly modern monochrome feel. Is it ok to paint a hallway white? Peel off the decorator’s tape while the paint is still wet. This stops the paint from drying and peeling off alongside your tape. There’s a reason wooden bannisters are so popular, and it’s because of how much they can warm up your home to invoke a classic and rustic aesthetic. These homeowners decided to turn their bannister into a feature by painting each individual railing a different colour within the same shade spectrum. The result is an ombre effect, which is particularly effective for homes with neutral aesthetics in need of some extra ‘pop.’ They will continue this process for several months after application. For most people, the smell of fresh paint is relatively pleasant and represents a job well done. However, many of these volatile organic compounds are suspected carcinogens and can cause harmful long-term effects on your health. Some of these concerns include headaches, respiratory problems, long-term breathing issues, nausea and irritated eyes.

As a result, this simple restoration will revamp the wood and keep it looking good for years to come. ‘Contemporary doesn’t mean cheap’ handrail designsWhile the final coat dries, peel off any decorator’s tape when the paint is still wet. Let it completely dry before painting your spindles. I used a simple solution of soap and water and cleaned the railings fairly well. I removed any gunk or other remnants from each banister (5 pieces total) so that the primer would adhere properly. If painting a bare wood banister where paint has been removed go over with a 120 grit sandpaper first and then a fine grit 220 sandpaper. If previously painted, use a 180 grit sandpaper to smooth out any lumps, then a 220 grit sandpaper to finish. Infuse your banister with your personality by adding a pop of colour. Let your creativity flow like an artist’s brush, choosing shades that reflect your passions and unique style. Whether it’s a daring red for an adventurous spirit or a serene blue for a calm soul, let your banister speak your language.
