About this deal

This is my fifth book by Purcell now, and she's honestly become one of my favourite modern Gothic authors out there - she just does the Victorian horror trope so well. Most of her stories are slow burns and aren't exactly on-the-edge-of-your-seat kind of scary, but the mounting sense of unease and dread grips you until you're holding your breath, waiting for tragedy to strike. Organisational changes in the Velen section of the walkthrough to reflect the increased level of Griffin School Gear.

The Whispering Muse is everything that Gothic horror should be. It’s haunting, eerie, and compulsive. A cautionary tale that you should never underestimate a woman’s ability to exact revenge. Lilith, the lead actress is desperate to have a taste of the good life, to become an actress so ethereal, so beloved, that people will adore her for eternity. Enter Melpomene and with a pact firmly in place, Lilith soon becomes infamous yet she must remember the shadow that begins to turn her world darker will only make her more and more hungry for things beyond her reach, even when those around Lilith try to warn her about what lurks in the shadows. Mrs Dyer is an interesting character, on the surface she appears the victim, an unloved wife whose husband frivolously spends her wealth, a woman scorned who desperately wants to protect her daughter and seeks a confidant in Jenny. Though her actions are not quite genuine, her jealousy permeates and her generosity towards Jenny only signals manipulation, her kindness causing Jenny guilt and a sense that she owes Mrs Dyer a great debt. Mrs Dyer claims that Lilith is the deceiver, the thorn in her side, yet Mrs Dyer is also Jenny’s thorn. Mrs Dyer is ruthless and is arguably more akin to Lady Macbeth than Lilith is. Yet perhaps in a patriarchal society these three women need a touch of Lady Macbeth in them just to survive.

News & Articles

Set in Far North Queensland the book has such an atmospheric setting that you feel like you are right there experiencing the tropical weather with the humidity and the constant rain with a cyclone fast approaching. Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted. There’s many topical themes in the book, all added with a deft touch, including domestic violence, racism, sexual harassment, date rape and PTSD. With the help of a shop keeper in the town of Blighty named Zoe and the help of a local doctor intern named Mason, Keira sets out to find whatever she can on why there are restless spirits in the area along with finding out more about herself and how she came to end up in that area with only the memory of her name.

This book has an almost eerie undercurrent running through it. It felt like people weren't in control of their actions and they could explain away their misdeeds by blaming the rainforest. The Whispering. The cemetery is alive with faint, spectral shapes, led by a woman who died before her time... and Keira, the only person who can see her, has become her new target. Determined to help put the ghost to rest, Keira digs into the spirit's past life with the help of unlikely new friends, and discovers a history of deception, ill-fated love, and murder. Lots of plot holes throughout but I am guessing these will be wrapped up in future installments, this is essentially a novel broken into five parts. According to Darcy, this book has sat completed on her hard drive for years. Reading The Whispering Dead, I felt this was the work of a younger and less experienced author. The Whispering Dead is not up to par with other books by Darcy. In desperate need of employment, Jenny takes up a job as a dresser at the Mercury Theatre. However, the post comes with strings attached, in that she must spy on the lead actress, Lilith. The latter is a true artiste, with a demanding nature, and a secret that threatens Jenny's employer. As events unfold, this becomes a story of superstition and revenge, with a range of startling deaths to match.

Set at the Mercury Theatre in Victorian London, Miss Jennifer Wilcox accepts a job offer from Mrs Dyer, the wife of the Mercury's owner. Fallen on hard times - the cause of which is revealed later - Jennifer must provide for her family and despite being brought low by her circumstances, eagerly accepts the position of dresser. Jennifer will need to make and mend all of the costumes, style hair and organise the accessories for the leading actress at the Mercury. Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):

At the Mercury Theatre in Londons glamorous West End, rumours are abound which all point to the impossible, curses that could never be anything more than simple hearsay and gossip. Unless….. Okay look, Darcy Coates tried to do something somewhat different than normal. I can see that. I recognize it. She’s done it a few times. But in this case, I didn’t really like it. I do think she writes tried and true haunted house stories best. Deliciously creepy, riveting and full of heart with compelling characters and brilliant twists ... glitteringly dark and mesmerising' Jennifer Saint, Sunday Times bestselling author of Ariadne and Elektra We all enjoy the surreal, mind-binding, over-the-top puzzles in Myst. But you won't find any of those in The Whispering Valley. Since the game is taking place in a realistic setting, the puzzles are also realistic. But it doesn't mean that they will be easy to solve, no! I did not really warm to the characters - some of them are supposed to be vile - but even Jenny the protagonist felt a little one-dimensional and I couldn't really get on board with how she was used as a pawn throughout the novel.

About the contributors

When a man goes missing in the rainforest, the past begins to resurface, breathing new life into memories of previous tragedies - two girls lost, seventeen years apart. In a town where it's easiest to turn a blind eye, the guilt runs deep and everyone in Granite Creek has something to hide. This was a beautifully written story with some likeable and not so likeable characters, and a few moral dilemmas thrown in for good measure.

Zoe's stupid ridiculous reasoning for Keira to watch out for Mason is hilarious. She tells her that he went through years of schooling to become a doctor and dropped out his last year. That's it! Ohhhhh scandalous!! Zoe made a noise that was somewhere between derision and annoyance. “Look, I’m not telling you to shun him or anything, but…just be cautious. He’s hiding something. And in my calculated opinion, there’s an extremely high chance that he’s a serial killer who had to flee the campus in fear of being caught.” Why does that mean he's hiding something?? Maybe he couldn't afford school anymore. Maybe someone was going through an illness.

With a storyline that switches between now and thirty years ago, the past unravels itself and rushes up to the present, and long unanswered questions finally get resolved. The movie expertly combines elements of horror, mystery, and suspense to create an engaging and captivating storyline. The acting is superb, with So Ju-yeon and Kim Min-kyu delivering standout performances as the two detectives. The supporting cast is equally impressive, with each actor bringing depth and nuance to their respective roles. But there is so much more going on within the town of Granite Creek. And it’s been going on for more than 30 years. Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
