About this deal

I’m extremely pleased by the quality of the newly introduced sapphire glass, always shiny and clear, so much that it seems to disappear from the view when you look at the dial under certain angles. In terms of design, the Seiko Prospex Sumo has a distinctive aesthetic that sets it apart from other dive watches. The watch has a bold and chunky case, with a large bezel that is easy to grip and turn. The dial is simple and easy to read, with large hour markers and hands that are coated with Seiko’s proprietary Lumibrite material for enhanced visibility in low-light conditions. Leather strap watches tend to fit without a problem for most wearers. However, watches fitted with metal bracelets often need adjusting to get the perfect fit. The Seiko Prospex Sumo is powered by Seiko’s 6R35 automatic movement, which provides a power reserve of up to 70 hours. The movement is accurate and reliable, and has been tested to meet Seiko’s high standards for precision and durability. The hands are updated with a triangled minute and hour hand which is more suitable for the Sumo and enriches the impression and personality of the Sumo. All hands have plenty of LumiBrite and have a great contrast of the dial making it easy to tell the time. Case

The dial is definitely the highlight of this watch as it has a lovely vibrant green color with a beautiful sunburst brushed finish. Due to the sunburst effect of the dial, it reflects the sunlight beautifully, and changes look from a fir green to a striking bright emerald color. Because already at first glance, you will notice that the Seiko SPB103j1 and all of the other Seiko watches are big, bulky, and have a hefty weight. This is part of the personality of the Sumo, which of course goes very well with the purpose of the watches. The bracelet goes very well with the sporty design of the watch, but some may be surprised to see a 20mm bracelet for a case of this size. In our opinion, it works very well. The watch is presented with the now-iconic ”Sumo” case which is, as mentioned, large, bulky, and sturdy. The dial of the Seiko SPB101J1 is slightly matte which gives it a textured and rich finish and also prevents glare and distracting reflections. The dial has not changed very much from the predecessor as the text is the same, the date window still has the white squared line around it and the Prospex logo still is present. The dial is however richly filled with luminova, or as Seiko calls it “LumiBrite”, which really does glow brightly in the dark.

The 2022 Seiko Sumo

I bought the Seiko Prospex Automatic Sumo SPB101J1 about ten days ago and I have been wearing it daily since then with great satisfaction. If you are looking for a professional dive watch that can do all of that, and have a seriously sporty presence on the wrist, the SPB103j1 ”Sumo” may just be the watch for you. If you require an extra large bracelet or you are in need of additional links these may be supplied at an additional cost. At its very edge, closest to the crystal, it is sloped. This means the bezel sits taller than the actual crystal, which keeps it protected and minimizes the risk of getting scratches on it. Speaking of the crystal, this watch is equipped with a sapphire crystal. This is something that the predecessor did not have. A big improvement indeed. The bracelet is very beautifully finished and feels solid. Generally, affordable watches tend to compromise on the bracelet the most and have things like folded links and hollow end links which results in the impression of poor finish, but with this bracelet, Seiko shows that you actually get your money’s worth.

Today, we sat down to take a look at the new Seiko Sumo Prospex Diver at Baselworld 2019: an update to a fan favorite. Yes, the Seiko Prospex Sumo SPB101J1 is water-resistant up to 200 meters. This makes it suitable for swimming and diving. Sitting down to take a look at all the new models within the Seiko portfolio takes some serious concentration. The number of introductions can be hard to keep up with and there’s a lot of detail to remember. When we sit down, we go through Grand Seiko, all of the re-editions, the special editions, the limited models, the models supporting some sort of organization, and it truly goes on. Trust us, we love it that Seiko brings so much to Baselworld each and every year, but sometimes we crave some good, honest pieces without a story. Today’s introduction is such an example in the new Seiko Sumo Prospex Diver.Overall, the dial is very well executed and manages to stay true to the Sumo design, whilst adding a very vibrant colorful touch. The lime on this watch is great and glows brightly for many hours, which we expect in a dive watch. The Sumo case is a piece of art with all its mix of brushed and polished surfaces. The detail of the rotating bezel entering the case is stunning.

When purchasing a watch which has a metal bracelet with adjustable links, we will gladly adjust the watch bracelet to fit your wrist before sending the watch to you - free of charge! Watch sizing can only be generally carried out on watches with metal bracelets, steel, titanium, gold, etc. We understand the importance of sizing the length of your watch bracelet or strap to provide the perfect fit. Our simple to use watch sizing guide allows you to measure the size of your wrist from the comfort of your own home. The movement is very precise and so far it gained about +2 seconds per day with a regular use. The 70-hour power reserve is excellent as it allows you to give the watch some rest over the weekend and to have it ready on Mondays (but, honestly, this is not going to happen to me as I’m pretty sure I will be wearing this beauty all the time I can).Since 2007, the Sumo watches used the 6R15, and whilst this proved to be a trusted, sturdy, and reliable workhorse movement, Seiko decided it was time for an upgrade for this watch and therefore, it is powered by the latest version, the 6R35. This movement is still the same base but has been improved and refined. The Seiko Sumo is also known as the MM200, which stands for ”Marinemaster 200” because of the similarities with the much more expensive SLA021J1 known as the real MarineMaster ”MM300”. This truly is a great watch for the money and is a perfect entry-level professional Divers watch, Let’s have a deeper understanding of why that is so, and go into detail about theSeiko Prospex Sumo SPB101J1 Automatic Watch. Looking at the case and the overall design, these updated Sumo SPB321J1 and SPB323J1 are typical no-surprise models. It’s all about improving the quality, not the style. As such, the oversized dimensions of the original Sumo are maintained. No downsizing policy here, the Sumo was and still is a large watch with a 45mm diameter, a 12.9mm height and an unmistakable lug-to-lug measurement of over 52mm. Reading this will certainly stop more than one potential customer, however, keep in mind that despite what the specification sheet indicated, the Sumo has always been more comfortable on the wrist than you’ll ever imagine. But don’t expect the comfort of one of the new compact Prospex. The Sumo SPB321J1 here worn on our editor Robin’s 19cm wrist.

What is particularly interesting about this design is that its design has remained more or less unchanged since it was first presented, which goes to show it is a truly timeless design. Something watch enthusiast love, and proof that Seiko has done a great job with the design. Some other updates are here for the Seiko Sumo Prospex Diver and that includes a sapphire crystal – something that Seiko seems to be phasing in for divers above the Turtle level. Plus, and maybe this will serve as controversial, the Sumo contains a bezel with conservative font for its numbers instead of the wide, stretched numerals used in versions such as the current SBDC031. To my eyes, the indices change slightly too. They appear smaller and the 12:00 marker looks a lot classier. Regarding the hands, the minutes hand is thinner and the hour hand loses its chevron and gains a bisecting line through part of the lumed surface. Lastly, the Orient Kamasu (RA-AA0004E19A) is another comparable watch to the Seiko Prospex Sumo. It features a similar design with a stainless steel case and a reliable automatic movement. However, the Kamasu has a slightly smaller case size and a more affordable price point, making it a great option for those on a budget. When it comes to comparable watches to the Seiko Prospex Sumo (Reference: SPB101J1), there are a few options worth considering. One such watch is the Seiko Prospex Turtle (SRP777). Like the Sumo, the Turtle is a dive watch with a similar design and build quality. It also features a reliable automatic movement and a durable stainless steel case. However, the Turtle is slightly smaller than the Sumo, making it a better option for those with smaller wrists.Another comparable watch is the Citizen Promaster Diver (BN0151-09L). This watch also boasts a water resistance of up to 200 meters and a reliable automatic movement. However, the Promaster Diver has a more modern design with a larger case and a more colorful dial. It also features a solar-powered movement, making it a more eco-friendly option. The Seiko Prospex Sumo SPB101J1 has a power reserve of approximately 70 hours. This means that it can run for up to 70 hours after being fully wound.
