Set in the broader Flesh After Fifty program, the idea for Hawkes’ exhibition, 500 Strong, was to take nude portraits of 500 women. The final count ended up at about 420 after the project took longer than expected and the budget ran out. Women were invited to bring a prop to pose with, and each was given the option of having her face obscured. I grew up with a sense of shame about my physical appearance. Now I am honouring it, appreciating it, taking care of it. Courtesy Naked Wanderings When photographer Ponch Hawkes went looking for images of naked older women on the internet, she found acres of blank space, then a rich vein of what’s termed “granny porn”. Hawkes hit on this surprising corner of the internet when she was commissioned to take 500 portraits of women over the age of 50 – an act she didn’t recognise as radical until she realised how few such images existed. For a society preoccupied with the female body, interest drops off precipitously after 50. “For every woman, it’s on your mind, the question of body image and body hatred, and there isn’t any material about that for older women.” Three films in, and director Mathew Puccini has pretty much covered the gamut of queer experience. With a light touch and a lyrical eye, Puccini’s shorts play like a moving triptych of quietly pivotal moments in the lives of queer men. “The Mess He Made” starred Max Jenkins as a man waiting for the results of an HIV test, and “Lavender” featured Michael Urie as half of a couple who invite a younger third into their longterm relationship. “Dirty” explores the awkwardness of a more universal folly — bottoming for the first time. As always in Puccini’s work, the characters are tender and natural; the images aglow with intimacy.

Danny Wolf: It’s gotta be 100 or so? At least 100 scenes of nudity, and we probably left out 40,000.Jim McBride: And it is male and female, we should point out. This is a history of nudity in the movies, male and female. A few years on, they started their blog. The aim, the couple says, was to debunk some of the myths surrounding naturism. This was the most perfect, natural way to start the day and we would experience the same sensation each day for the next 12 days as we sailed on the world’s largest square rigger around the Mediterranean – in the nude. Earlier in the pandemic, there were reports of a growing interest in naturism, as more people were confined to their homes, working and socializing virtually.
