About this deal

Klimt / Schiele: Drawings is a unique opportunity to see extraordinary drawings produced by both artists, considered to be some of the 20th century’s most important works on paper. Among them are Klimt’s sketches for his seminal Beethoven Frieze, and unflinching self-portraits by Schiele, which due to their delicacy will not see the light of day again for many years. In around 100 portraits, allegories, landscapes and erotic nudes, prepare to encounter these two icons of early Modernism at their most raw and revealing. Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele are the two giants of Viennese modernism. Their overlapping artistic careers, which spanned from the turn of the 20th century until the end of the First World War, coincided with a radical rebirth of Viennese culture. The dynamic clash between forces of modernity and tradition in Vienna generated a spirit of invention that revitalised not only the fine and decorative arts, but also architecture, music, literature and science, producing extraordinary innovators in every field. Sigmund Freud, dramatists Arthur Schnitzler and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, composer Arnold Schönberg, and architects Josef Hoffmann and Adolf Loos are among those who transformed Vienna into a melting pot of new ideas. Fired by the city’s café culture with its lively exchange of ideas, Viennese modernism took on a unique, multi-faceted form that was expressed most fully in the artistic ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk or “total work of art”, fusing all aspects of artistic expression into a grand symphonic unity. Kallir and scholar Gerald Izenberg regard Schiele as fluid in sexuality and gender. Kallir says Schiele was "struggling with his own sexual feelings and gender norms" during a historical period of shifting gender expectations, the early women's movement, and criminalization of homosexuality. Some critics in the 21st century read his artwork as queer. The former was a founding member of the Vienna Secession, which united artists, sculptors and architects in a radical break with academic tradition, symbolised by Joseph Maria Olbrich’s revolutionary white building crowned with a dome of golden laurel leaves that housed the Secession’s exhibiting society. Klimt’s graceful mural, the Beethoven Frieze, designed for the 14th exhibition of the Viennese Secession in 1902 celebrating the genius of the great composer, merged Olbrich’s architecture and the inspiration of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to give expression to the Viennese ideal of the Gesamtkunstwerk.

was a seismic year in Vienna. As the Austro-Hungarian Empire crumbled, an intense period of creative vitality drew to an end with the deaths of two of its foremost artists. One was the preeminent and strikingly modern painter of fin-de-siècle Vienna, Gustav Klimt; the other the young, scandalous and prodigiously talented Egon Schiele. Both revelled in the immediacy of drawing, an ideal medium for exploring new ideas of modernity, subjectivity and the erotic. Do not translate text that appears unreliable or low-quality. Though he died at just 28 from the Spanish Flu in 1918, Egon Schiele remains an enduring figure in art history, having achieved lasting fame with his erotic, overtly sexual drawings and paintings.

Egon Schiele: The Radical Nude is at the Courtauld Gallery, London from 23 October to 18 January 2015.

Who Was Egon Schiele?

Schiele’s early works were especially controversial due to his use of minors as nude models and for depicting pubescent females in implicitly sensual positions.

In 1913, the Galerie Hans Goltz, Munich, mounted Schiele's first solo show. A solo exhibition of his work took place in Paris in 1914. [13] World War I to death [ edit ] Edith Schiele in a Striped Dress, Seated, 1915 Leopold Museum Sadly, their young lives were cut short. While working in Dalmatia (now part of Croatia), Neuzil contracted scarlet fever and died in 1917 at the age of 23. In 1918, a pregnant Edith Schiele succumbed to the Spanish flu; Egon died of the same cause three days later. He was 28. The multiple story lines of Egon and Wally – erotic exploration, artistic inspiration, obsession, loyalty, love, betrayal and service, all in the eye of a societal and geopolitical storm – continue to inspire. So does the powerful beauty, and beautiful power, of the many drawings and paintings of the woman sometimes described as Schiele’s ‘shadow’. Here, she at last shines in her own light. Creating some three thousand drawings over the course of his brief career, Schiele was both an extraordinarily prolific and unparalleled draughtsman. He regarded drawing as his primary art form, appreciating it for its immediacy of expression, and produced some of the finest examples of drawing in the 20 th century. Even his painterly oeuvre revealed a style that captured some of drawing's essential characteristics, with its emphasis on contour, graphic mark, and linearity. Wladika, Michael (2012). Leopold Museum-Privatstiftung.When his case was heard by a court, the allegations of enticement and kidnapping were withdrawn, but the artist was found to be guilty of displaying pornographic paintings in a place where minors may see them. In court, the judge used a candle flame to burn one of the offensive artworks. The 21 days he had previously spent in detention were considered, and he was condemned to three further days in prison. Schiele produced a collection of 12 paintings while imprisoned that depicted the challenges and misery of being trapped in a detention cell. Self-portrait, making a face (1910) by Egon Schiele; Egon Schiele, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons Despite his military duty, Schiele continued to exhibit in Berlin. He also performed well at Prague, Zürich, and Dresden. His first responsibilities were protecting and conveying Russian detainees. Schiele was finally assigned as a scribe in a POW camp near Mühling due to his weak heart and outstanding handwriting. Here, he was permitted to sketch and paint incarcerated Russian soldiers. In your research, you learned that in her old age, Adele told an art historian she had an affair with Schiele. What can you tell us about that? Unlike his master, Klimt, with whom Schiele is most generally identified, he painted a large number of self-portraits, indicating an obsession with the self comparable to Picasso. Schiele’s aesthetic affected both Expressionist contemporaries such as Oskar Kokoschka and Neo-Expressionist successors such as Julian Schnabel, Francis Bacon, and Jean-Michel Basquiat .
