About this deal

The result is a 4K HDR picture that we find a little more exciting than the similarly priced Sony A80J during bright scenes. Sony’s OLED is only a hair behind on dark detail and does a little bit better at shading some scenes, but there’s still enough skill in the QN90A to give us a very three-dimensional feel as our hero climbs up the inside of the tall turbine tower. We watch multiple scenes at every resolution. But in the interest of not having this be the longest news story ever written, we've summarised.

Unlike Samsung’s higher-end Neo QLED models, the QN90A doesn’t come with a One Connect box, a handy accessory that functions as a connection hub for all your cabling. Instead, all the connection ports can be found at the rear of the TV, to the right as you face the screen. These all face sideways and are located 23cm from the edge of the panel. Information about the maximum vertical viewing angle, within which the image on the screen is of acceptable quality.Samsung’s revision of its Tizen interface has caused a few ruffles. I don’t dislike it, which sounds like damming it with faint praise, but given the number of features and options available, it makes sense for Samsung to go down dedicated hubs to give everything space. But there are some quirks. The Neo QLED QN95A ran the OLED pretty close, but it laps this traditional QLED. The QLED Q80A falls into the common trap of being too dark, but while the two models above stumble into gloom, the Q80A falls headfirst into it.

The static contrast shows the ratio between the brightest and the darkest color, which the display can reproduce simultaneously, for example, within one and the same frame/scene. From gloomy shadows to sun-scorched scenes – see the spectacular detail in every shot, exactly as you’re meant to. Thanks to leading HDR brightness, you'll see it in all true-to-life quality with rich colour and remarkable contrast. Plus, with Adaptive HDR10+ every frame is optimised to perfection, so that every movie you watch looks just as the director intended. As with the other Samsung Neo QLED TVs we’ve tested recently, the 50QN90A’s mini LED lighting is a revelation when it comes to the sort of contrast we can expect from an LCD TV. Max light output HDR (high dynamic range) while displaying small white square taking up 60% of the screen (measured in Nits) Samsung’s penchant for sharpness continues to its upscaling of sub-4K content. Samsung has applied AI technology to its upscaling for a couple of generations now with consistently striking results, but the 50QN90A confirms that the technology continues to improve. Especially when it comes to dealing with any compression or colour noise an HD source might contain. Size class of the display as declared by the manufacturer. Often this is the rounded value of the actual size of the diagonal in inches. The 50QN90A’s connections are all built into the TV rather than integrated into an external One Connect box of the sort provided with Samsung’s flagship TVs. They’re still plentiful, though, including four HDMIs, three USBs and the usual wi-fi and Bluetooth options. One of the HDMIs supports eARC, for passing lossless Dolby Atmos audio out to a suitably capable soundbar or AVR, while HDMI 4 supports the latest gaming features of 4K at 120Hz, VRR (Variable Refresh Rate), and ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode).
