Once you’ve taken a patch you can afford (and paid for it – place your buttons in the pile with the rest), put the neutral token in the resulting empty space. You should move your time token along on the central board by the number of squares indicated on the patch. Each player receives a quilt board and time token of their colour (yellow or green). They also receive five buttons. These buttons are the currency used in the game. The remainder of the buttons are placed on the table close to the playing area. The aim of Patchwork is simple: in this game, as in life, the player with the most buttons wins. Why? Because, let’s face it: buttons are great. If you have played the original Patchwork, then you will know how it works. The gameplay hasn’t changed in this version. So, what is Patchwork Halloween Edition exactly? Well, it is exactly what it says on the box. A spooky, witch, bat, and pumpkin covered rendition of Uwe Rosenberg’s classic two-player puzzly powerhouse! Spooky Set Up!
Patchwork is a little gem. There are three things happening; building the button economy, managing time and the consequences of time, and manipulating which patchwork pieces are available. It is not really about the patchwork pieces or making a quilt, it is about managing an economy in a time efficient manner and competing to do so against an opponent. You can’t always rely on getting special patches. By the nature of the game, it can work out that your opponent reaches all of the patch spaces before you. Therefore, try not to rely on them to fill in spaces in the middle of your board. Q: If at the end of the game both players have so many blank spaces on their boards that they go negative when scoring their points, do you assume they both have zero points or do you calculate the sum exactly?Like most roll and writes, there are certain abilities players can utilise to best help them score and win. However, Patchwork Doodle doesn’t require you to earn them, you can just use each one once as you need to. You can slice a patch and use one half, choose a patch to the left or right of the currently chosen one, add a single square patch, or use any ability a second time. These are tremendously handy in a pinch, particularly when looking for the biggest rectangle and needing a specific shape to plug a gap. How It Handles Patchwork Express was released in 2018. It uses the same mechanics as the original Patchwork, but has larger tiles, fewer squares per board, and simpler scoring, making it easier for a younger audience or faster gameplay. Patchwork is a two player game in which players are trying to complete a patchwork quilt. To do so they must collect tiles of various shapes and sizes and fit them onto their quilt board. Players want to collect pieces with buttons on, as this will give them the ability to get more patches for their quilt. However, they must also keep an eye on the time board to ensure their quilt is as completed as possible when time runs out. Try to leave some space for larger tiles towards the end of the game. At the start of the game you will not have enough buttons to buy the larger tiles. By the end of the game you will want them to fill in spaces but they can be awkward shapes and sizes so bear this in mind when building your grid.
You could play this game facing each other or in any additional setup. If necessary, you could sit next to each other with the main playing area in front of both of you. There aren’t any secrets involved in this game, so it’s not like you’ll have a hand to hide from your opponent. There may be times where you’re faced with three quilt tiles that cost more buttons than you can afford. The only option you have available to you in these cases is to advance your time marker to receive some buttons. In this instance you will always move your time marker into the space directly in front of the leading player and then receive an amount of buttons equal to the total number of spaces moved. Then it becomes the other player’s turn. If the circled player moves to the space marked with an “X” they will receive 5 buttons. In my opinion, the biggest mistake you can make in Patchwork is taking it too seriously. Enjoy your pretend knitting and do your best to make a satisfying pattern. This game’s tactical moves are minimal, so make the most of what it is: a piece of light-hearted fun. I’d liken Patchwork to an adult coloring book. I’d rather lose than win with random 1-square holes everywhere!To determine the winner, count up all remaining buttons in your possession and add the value of special tiles you’ve collected. From this number, subtract 2 for every empty tile on your quilt board. The player with the highest score wins, and in case of a tie, the player who first reached the end of the space board is declared the winner. Your First Game of Patchwork Some people, of course, disagree with me. You can play an intense, algorithm-heavy version and ensure your victory. Well done you. But I think that misses the point. Choose which side of the time board you’d like to play with and place it in the middle of the table. There is no difference between the sides, choosing a side is simply a matter of aesthetic preference.

On a player’s turn they have two options – advance and receive buttons or take and place a patch. They may carry out only one of these actions.
