About this deal

One of the most important, yet underappreciated, features of the Arctic sea ice is the ability of its blindingly white surfaces to reflect sunlight. For at least as long as our species has existed, the frozen seas at the top of our world have acted as a massive parasol that helps keep the planet cool and its climate stable.

The mind-melting maths puzzle seems like a basic logic question on the surface, as you're given a bunch of information on some made-up people - these ones are called Albert, Bernard, and Cheryl - and asked to come up with a solution to the question using the information given in the question itself. The choice was made to use a star trabecular structure which allows excellent quality in the fabrication of the beams, when properly inclined, using SLM technology. Rometsch PA, Zhu Y, Wu X, Huang A (2022) Review of high-strength aluminium alloys for additive manufacturing by laser powder bed fusion. Mater Des 219:110779. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.matdes.2022.110779 It may sound straightforward enough, but grinding and polishing a speculum metal mirror is not for the faint-hearted. Caroline Herschel, sister of William and herself an accomplished astronomer who went on to discover eight comets, wrote of her ‘attendance on my Brother when polishing, that by way of keeping him alife I was even obliged to feed him by putting the Vitals by bits into his mouth – this was once the case when at the finishing of a 7 foot mirror, he had not left his hands from it for 16 hours together’ (Michael Hoskin (ed.), Caroline Herschel’s Autobiographies (Cambridge, 2003) p. 55).We had a go at making speculum metal telescope mirrors – arsenic NOT included – as part of a “how-it’s-made” film for the Science City gallery. We wanted to showcase some of the extraordinary craft skills needed to produce many of the historical scientific instruments in our collection. She did concede though that "rage" zombies through an anger-inducing virus could be possible: "There certainly are some microbes which can change behaviour and lead to aggression, with the rabies virus being the best known. Nuechterlein J, Iten J (2016) Reactive additive manufacturing. Patent Application Publication No. US2016/0271878A1 Sep.22,2016

Bottini L (2021) Study of selective laser melting process parameters to improve the obtainable roughness of AlSi10Mg parts. Selected Topics in Manufacturing. pp 121–139. Springer, Cham. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-030-57729-2_9 Albert says: "I don't know when Cheryl's birthday is, but I know that Bernard does not know too," and Bernard states: "At first I don't know when Cheryl’s birthday is, but I know now." This then prompts Albert to say: "Then I also know when Cheryl's birthday is." Our speculum metal mirror is about the same size as that for the reflecting telescope with which William Herschel discovered the planet Uranus in 1781 – the first planet to be discovered with a telescope. We have a similar reflecting telescope made by Herschel on display in the Science City gallery, as well as the mirror which we had specially made. A tweet with almost 7,000 likes said: "How is a zombie virus get buried in a frozen lake? And why did they dig it up? That doesn't even make sense". In the question, you're given 10 dates across four months - May 15, 16, and 19, June 17 and 19, July 14 and 16, and August 14, 15, and 17. Then, you're given a couple of cryptic quotes from Albert, who only knows the month Cheryl was born, and Bernard, who only knows the date.

The original mirror has a mass of 210 g, and it needs 205 g balancing masses. 2.2 Selected AM technology and material The remote sensing and scanning technologies have recently received large amounts of attention by the industrial and academic communities. The term remote sensing was coined in the 1950s and lately defined as the method employing electromagnetic energy to detect, achieve, and measure the geometrical feature of a target [ 1]. Milan B (2016) Laser additive manufacturing. Materials, Design, Technologies, and Applications. Woodhead Publishing, Cambridge This paper explores the possibilities given by metal AM technologies to improve the performance of the fabricated parts. In particular, it describes the re-design and fabrication of a metallic mirror using the selective laser melting (SLM) process, applicable on an industrial scale.
