About this deal

I also have to discuss the relevance of the MDR-1AM2 today in 2020. With the recent release of the Sony WH-1000XM4 in Aug 2020, it would be interesting to listen to how the wired MDR-1AM2 fares against its wireless counterpart. While I do not have a pair of WH-1000XM4 to make a definitive comparison at the moment, I intend to audition them one day to come to that conclusion. But what about those on the fence? Maybe you’re not sure if you need all those highs or all that bass? Give the MDR-1AM2 a listen anyway. To be sure, the low end is intense – but it still manages to be intense in a natural way. And this Sony’s high end, while smooth, remains paradoxically detailed. Final Analysis I use this pair mostly with cassette walkmans, application where the elevated bass is a plus, as many walkmans and cassettes don't have a flat First off, just note that do this at your own risk. If you've modded before, this is a pretty simple mod and requires no soldering. Just don't accidentally poke the drivers nor pull the internal wiring too much.

Por lo que respecta a su sonido, suenan dinámicos, con mucha vida, con unos graves y medios excelentes, mientras que los agudos tienen buena presencia sin resultar estridentes, permitiendo que se escuchen todos los detalles de tu música favorita. It seems to be very well tuned for its intended market: the average consumer who most likely would want a v-shaped sound. This may be a hard sell with the MDR-1000XM3 going for just a bit more at MSRP if we're talking from a consumer's point of view.

Specifications

Ears also tend to get hot after listening to it for prolonged periods of time. For the MSRP they ask on it, I really expected a lot more have to be honest. If you intend on using these for audio recording, whether music based, film/video production.. these headphones will provide a genuinely pure representation of the entire range of frequencies on offer... IF you have the ear for that kind of thing as well. If you understand what that all means, pre-EQíng and pre-mastering, you will appreciate exactly what these headphones have to offer. I bought the MDR-1AM2 in 2022 at sale for a price of 100 euros (the MSRP is more than 200), main reason being I wanted to have a pair of very light headphones.

Under the hood, the Audio Technica ATH-MSR7B utilizes a larger 45 mm driver. In contrast, the MDR-1AM2 sports a smaller driver measuring 40 mm. Both being relatively easy to drive, neither one requires amplification, though the MSR7B would benefit slightly more from some amplification. Now for the high range. This is mostly what makes the headphones sound clearer. When I have these on a lower volume I could fall asleep with these on. The high range on a lower volume the headphone has a warm sound signature but when I turn up the volume some of that treble range can break through but instead of being able to sleep with them on they act more excited like most other headphones but much more explosive bass with these. Obviously you should never use headphones on high volume it will seriously damage your hearing. Do you like safekeeping your valuables away from harm? Good, because the Sony carry bag should assist you with just that by covering the MDR-1AM2 to safekeep it against any likely damage. MDR-1AM2: Verdict For 100-150euros, they make a lot more sense and they can be very good headphones to fit all usage scenarios, as the microphone included on the single-eneded cable Compared to the previous version the bass has been tamed significantly, but it's still way above what it should be.

Return policy

During the measurements, a special amplifier was used with zero total output impedance over the entire frequency range, which required no compensation for the amplitude response . The microphone is calibrated to 45 kHz with an appropriate frequency response correction. RAA measurements are made in 192 kHz / 24 bit mode. So the SONY DAPs which are power limited will be able to drive those nicely without the need to crank it at the maximum setting. How’s that for specifications?! We’ve got an expansive frequency range of 3-100,000 hertz. While I honestly doubt anyone has the ears to take full benefit of those higher frequencies, the numbers still manage to impress me. Meanwhile, that low impedance of just 16 ohms will pair well with any low output device, from a phone or laptop to a portable high-res music player. Finally, sound pressure is a fairly standard 98 decibels – more than capable of adequate volume in normal listening situations. Low End At 16Ω and 98dB/mW, these are super easy to drive, literally any device can drive them very loud, even ones that output only 5mW.

The frame is light but the build quality remains sturdy without feeling cheap. It should be noted that the pressure-relieving earpads, while comfortable, may trap heat when wearing the headphones for about an hour or so. The earpads tend to flatten over a listening session; my ears gradually begin to touch the grills in front of the drivers when wearing these for more than 2 hours. I have to take these off for about 20min to let the earpads return to its original shape. Sporting a similar design naturally translates that the MDR-1AM2 would, like its predecessor feature a 40mm driver, however, the 40mm HD driver on the MDR-1AM2 is not the same one found on its predecessor but a newly developed one with an aluminium-coated liquid crystal polymer diaphragm, supporting a full range response from 3 Hz to 100 kHz similar to that of the MDR-1A. In terms of sharing some of the DNA from the MDR-Z1R, the MDR-1AM2 adopted the Fibonacci patterned grill from the signature series headphone, which was inspired by the Fibonacci sequence in nature, its equalised opening ensure minimal sound colouration and faithful reproduction of Hi-Res Audio sources. And that depth on the Sony MDR-1AM2 constitutes most of it’s soundstage. There’s a characteristic separation of vocals from surrounding instrumentation. However, the soundstage still seems a bit cramped for instruments. The result is a deeper but narrower listening experience.

From the impulse response, most of the parameters under study are calculated: frequency response, phase-frequency response, group delay, waterfall, step response and square wave. The impulse response is visually not informative and for obtaining the majority of characteristics a fast Fourier transform and other mathematical algorithms with the analysis of the total pulse length are used. The total pulse length is about 5 seconds, while only the beginning of a pulse of 2-4 milliseconds is visually visible. Vertically, the visual detail does not exceed 40-45 dB. But as I said, at typical listening levels, I found the MDR-1AM2 to be quite pleasing. A common complaint of many headphones these days is overly strong bass but this is certainly not the case with the MDR-1AM2. Bass is strong but not overly emphatic and clean. It is certainly not muddy, so drums strike with adequate authority and precision. The mids are present and not grainy, which gives vocals and guitars a smooth and inviting sound. The treble, however, is its most problematic component as it is overly emphasized and has an uneven, unnatural sound. The perception of the number of low frequencies depends on the volume according to the curves of equal loudness. (ISO 226-2009 Acoustics. Normal equal-loudness-level contours). For the base level, 72 dB SPL (live performance of several instruments with vocals without amplifiers with acoustics) is selected. When you select another base level, the dependence varies slightly and is suitable for almost all levels. The graph shows the change in the perception of the frequency response of the headphones when listening to music with a different loudness relative to the natural level. When listening to headphones at a low volume, the perception of recoil in the low frequency range decreases, and when you listen to it at a high volume, it increases. Para mí, se sienten con cuerpo, ligeramente robustos, muy bien definidos. Este tipo de sonido me parece que es el que más valoro, la fidelidad en estos medios es muy buena.

The 1AM2 and MV1 couldn’t be more different in the high frequencies. If you like your treble smooth, and you don’t like too much attention being called to it, then the 1AM2 will be more for you. With the MV1, a lot more focus is granted to the highs, and it is considerably more lifted than the 1AM2. There’s more frequency content to articulate, and the MV1 responds well, but not without some sharp edges. When compared to other mixing headphones from the likes of Beyerdynamic, these highs will be easier to digest. However, if you’re treble sensitive, then the 1AM2 will be both more comforting in its highs, as well as accurate. Summary

While I don't see myself using over-ear headphones for anything else than listenting to music, other people like to be able to use such a headphone for calls as well. The frequency response in RAA is obtained through the reproduction and analysis of a special noise signal with the subsequent generation of an impulse response.
