And staying true to your craft. The standard Wild Turkey bourbon reportedly starts as a dry mix of 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley. From there, the mash is fermented and distilled. Longbranch, the bourbon brand co-created by actor Matthew McConaughey and Wild Turkey, on Tuesday announced the second chapter in the brand’s “Wonder What If” advertising campaign, conceptualized by and starring McConaughey. Wild Turkey carried out an unprecedented act (for their own distillery, not the wider industry) when they produced a bottle that carries a name of someone other than that of the Russells, their recently confirmed dynasty of master distillers. Eddie Russell collaborated with the Wild Turkey brand creative director, movie star Matthew McConaughey, and crafted a new bourbon to continue their mission of reestablishing Wild Turkey as a “barroom name.” The bourbon that resulted of this partnership is Wild Turkey Longbranch.

Since that time, Wild Turkey has grown both domestically and internationally, releasing 11 various bourbons and rye whiskeys. These include their 81 and 101 proof offerings, as well as Wild Turkey Rare Breed, and American Honey Liqueur.Matthew McConaughey and Master Distiller Eddie Russell are proud to present this rare, small-batch bourbon. Eight Year-Old Wild Turkey Bourbon is refined with Texas mesquite and oak charcoals for deeper flavor and complexity. The aroma is a balanced blend of vanilla and spices. Flavors of caramel, pear, and hints of citrus round out the palate, while the subtle, smoky finish is buttery smooth—with notes of gentle pepper and toasted oak.

Just like other whiskeys and bourbons which use charcoal filtration, Longbranch doesn’t have strong notes of charcoal. This is due either to the notes aligning perfectly with the traditional flavor of Wild Turkey or that using charcoal to filter whiskey doesn’t add any obvious flavor. Instead, it just removes unpleasant tastes from the aged bourbon, which has gone through its filtration process. One thing I don’t get: any smoky notes. I didn’t expect it to be as pronounced as something like the Balcones Brimstone (which infuses scrub oak smoke in the whiskey) but a stronger indication of the Texas mesquite would be appreciated. It might just be that the mesquite isn’t strong enough to make itself known through the other flavors, but that still isn’t great in my book. Taking a sip, what stands out to me is that the flavors here are really well balanced. There’s the orange citrus, the sweet caramel, and the vanilla that I’ve seen before in Wild Turkey — but instead of being assaulted by that orange flavor, it’s now a contributing part of the cast. It plays nicely with the other flavors, toning down the zesty acidity to almost be more of an apple note, and the combination is really remarkably good. Even after the contents within the bottle are gone, you’ll want to keep this cool looking container around. You might even be able to use it as a decanter if you happen to break a bottle or the cork breaks at some point in time.

When Wild Turkey hired McConaughey [making him the highest paid creative director in the ad industry] they were most likely going to want to get the most out of the arrangement. They not only wanted to bank on McConaughey’s name and have him write and star in their commercials, but they also wanted his help developing a new Wild Turkey expression with his name on it. A touch of spice leftover from the palate is accompanied by a nutty caramel flavor. Charred oaks and earthy ryes leave you with an aftertaste of barrel char and rye. The campaign features 11 ad spots, ranging between seven and 47 seconds, all of which were shot in a single day on a ranch just outside of McConaughey’s native Austin, Texas. McConaughey is the only character and speaks in each spot.

FINISH: The familiar Wild Turkey spice and oak take over on a medium length finish with a very slight hint of smoke. The charcoal filtering has sweetened the finish a bit thereby rounding off the spice corners a bit. The Wild Turkey distillery, located in Lawrenceburg, KY, sits at the top of Wild Turkey Hill. It’s off-balance on the sweeter and zestier side of the equation, but it’s still a good flavor and experience in my opinion. Wild Turkey also offers limited edition single-barrel whiskeys, bourbon, and rye at lower proofs, and its always popular Master’s Keep series. The Longbranch collaboration only shows that Wild Turkey is taking the necessary steps to fill any gaps in its portfolio. When he started working with Wild Turkey, McConaughey says they tried to dispel the perception that bourbon is “male, over 60, after work, on the porch” with a campaign featuring younger people socializing. Last year, a campaign titled “Wonder What If” featured the actor alone in a field talking and asking questions of a bottle of bourbon. A third campaign, which debuted this summer, was meant to be “simple, self-assured,” and focus once again on the distillery’s history.
