When ASICS kindly sent me a pair of the new Gel-Cumulus™ 23 it was an easy ask to write a review. These are my sixth pair of Gel-Cumulus™ and they really do just keep getting better and better. Engineered mesh upper adds strategic support in targeted areas while leaving some of the fibres open to improve breathability.

The polyester upper allows perspiration and heat to escape for comfortable exercise and foot hygiene. In addition, the textile lining and seamless upper eliminate the risk of unpleasant rubbing that can lead to chafing. The midsole lining also provides a pleasantly soft feel. Another major advantage of the Gel-Cumulus 23 is its low weight, which makes running more comfortable and smooth. Seriously, I can’t get my foot out of it. I like wearing it all the time, even when I’m not running. This shoe is just a great and reliable ride. What’s Special About the ASICS GEL-Cumulus 23? Top Three Things: It’s a neutral daily trainer with enough form in the heel to add stability for runners that care more about just getting out for a jog than those focused on their stride and speed. ASICS has been doing well in footwear design recently. Many of their shoes are now gender specific, meaning the shapes, foam designs and flex grooves are specific to the unique biomechanics of each genders mechanics. This is particularly important in the forefoot as the flex grooves need to line up with the metatarsophalangeal joints (toe joints). If this is not lined up well, there may be excessive pressure into the ligaments, small muscles, tendons, bones and the anterior portion of the plantar fascia. The men’s version only has the Space Construction on the heel whereas the women’s version has it on the heel and the forefoot.

You want a soft plush ride. Although the Cumulus is padded, its sibling the Gel Nimbus is a better option for those that want a plush feeling underfoot. Sam: Agree with Derek above on all points. As with the Ride 13 I do think the Cumulus has a slightly softer and more cushioned ride. As an all arounder I lean ever so slightly towards the more responsive, slightly firmer 880. Derek: The upper uses a dense but thin engineered mesh as the base material. There is an internal toe bumper up front and laminated ASICS logo provides a little bit of midfoot structure to the upper but otherwise, the upper is pretty simple. ASICS made significant updates to the GEL-Cumulus 22 that you now see in the GEL-Cumulus 23. For starters, the 23 now has a full-length FLYTEFOAM™ Propel midsole, which provides an ultra-lightweight springy bounce throughout your run. This foam helps make the ride feel effortless and enjoyable.A 3D SPACE CONSTRUCTION has been added to the top layer of the midsole to improve cushioning and flexibility. I had a little heel slip, but there’s a second lace hole at the top of the patter and the laces are long enough to do a modified lacing technique that solved any issues. The Gel Cumulus fits true to size. It’s not too narrow or too wide. This shoe should accommodate a wide variety of foot shapes easily. Dang, I want to hate the Gel Cumulus, but it’s comfortable
