As a camera glides over the snowy surface of Antarctica, it’s obvious that the OLED806 can’t produce the brightness peaks of a flagship LCD TV such as the Samsung QN95A, but it’s a dazzling image by OLED standards, and the detail contained within its highlights combines with stunning contrast and that supreme sharpness to make the icy mountains pop from the screen. It is, in short, stunning, and made all the more so by the lovely Ambilight. The sharpness isn’t messed up by camera pans or fast moving objects, either, thanks to Philips’ excellent motion compensation processing. The ‘Standard’ setting for this that’s the default for some picture presets is too aggressive, creating too much soap opera effect (excessive fluidity) and too many unwanted side effects. Its Pure Cinema and Movie settings, though, both offer excellent options for taking the edge off hardware judder without the image starting to look unnatural or uncinematic.
Based on our testing it boasts all of the stellar features of the 65-inch model C2 and newer C3, but it comes with a larger 77-inch screen. In fact, the only reason we don’t list it as the best overall is that, based on our experience, 77 inches is a little too large for most living rooms and it’s notably more expensive than its 65-inch siblings. Philips also supports the HGiG system that lets you use set up menus built into your console to establish the best gaming HDR experience, rather than the TV trying to figure out on the fly how best to handle incoming HDR game graphics. So, does the Philips 65-inch OLED807 offer up the image quality goods to compete as an ‘A’ brand in today’s TV market? Let’s find out…
Measurements
Both come with Philips’ latest 5th-gen P5 AI Dual Picture engine, which brings AI enhancements to reduce banding in images and bring more sharpness. According to Philips, they also have a new OLED panel, Ambilight, the built-in smart lighting system in previous Philips TVs, an audio overhaul thanks to the continued collaboration with Bower & Wilkins and much more to get excited about. The new P5 AI Intelligent Picture Engine uses neural networks and machine learning to adjust the balance between Philips’ five pillars of PQ – source, colour, contrast, motion and sharpness – for a more realistic and natural image. The only slight flaw with the OLED806’s delivery of Interstellar is that it doesn’t suppress the film grain in the way that some other TVs do, even when noise reduction is switched on. One could easily argue, though, that the film grain is part of the presentation, and it’s certainly not something that we find off-putting. A new Aurora feature even lets you combine Ambilight with a selection of ‘screen saver’ videos and images, ensuring that your TV could remain an attractive centrepiece to your living room even when you’re not actually watching it… assuming you don't mind the extra energy use.

From the OLED856 to the 9206, 4K/120Hz, Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and AMD’s FreeSync Premium Pro will be supported. Philips is finally a TV tuned for gamers. 5th Gen P5 AI picture processor LG's C-series OLED TVs are always the company's most popular, and the 42-inch C3 is the baby of the 2023 range. It's got a slightly less bright panel than the larger C3 models and it doesn't feature MLA or QD-OLED tech (which hasn't yet made it down to this sort of size), but it does boast the same exceptional feature set as well as the best overall picture quality available at this size. It's cheaper than its rivals, too.
Through our extensive suite of tests, our only complaint is that a bit of dark detail is missing when watching SDR content.
