I prefer the look I get from the this fixed 14mm over the look I get from the 14-24mm zoom. This is because the zoom's simple distortion squishes things in the corners closer together, while the complex distortion of this fixed 14mm lens stretches out the corners. Half the reason to shoot a 14mm lens is to stretch out the corners, and this fixed 14mm does this better than the zoom. The simpler distortion of the zoom is much easier to correct if you want perfectly straight lines. If you make the same shot with both lenses, you'll see very different renditions and angles in the corners. In the shot below shot with this fixed lens, you'll see the corners pull up, while with the zoom, they sag down.

If this concerns you; the only lens better is the remarkable 14-24mm f/2.8 AF-S zoom, which is much sharper in the corners at f/2.8 at 14mm. The 14-24mm is as sharp in the corners at 14mm and f/2.8 as this 14mm lens is at f/5.6. Lacquer is a varnish that dries to produce a hard, durable finish. It comes in gloss, matt, or satin matt finishes and can be clear or coloured. It is usually applied to the flooring to help reduce the damage caused by spillages and act as an additional wear layer. This makes lacquered floors ideal for more chaotic areas whilst maintaining their natural character. Distortion is complex. This 14mm has barrel distortion in the middle, but pincushion at the far corners of film or an FX digital camera.

Moving away from the center of the frame, there will naturally still be perspective distortion that causes a heavy skew on vertical lines as the lens is tilted upwards or downwards. However, because there is very limited barrel distortion with the straight lines, fixing this with only a perspective distortion correction is simple. It’s a surprisingly complex and advanced design for such an inexpensive lens. Hopefully that’s a good sign considering that ultra-wide, fast lenses have a greater tendency to have optical issues. If shooting the night sky, the stars in the frame corners will turn into little flying saucer-like shapes.
