About this deal

Away from a power outlet and need to charge your iPhone, other iPad, Apple Watch, or third-party USB device? Just connect the right cable or adapter to your iPadto share its long-lasting battery with your other devices: The Alternate Mode feature must be supported on the PC's hardware and software, and the connected device or dongle. You might also need a specific USB-C cable. Your PC (or phone) is providing power to other devices, so it has temporarily limited the power it provides to the device you just connected to.

It should allow video output and passthrough charging simultaneously. In a test connection from a MacBook to an LG 4K UltraFine Display, the MacBook was able to output video to the monitor, while the monitor was able to provide power to the MacBook, all through the single connection. Owners of the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro and M2 Air can charge via the MagSafe connector at the same time as using the Pro Hub.

What you need

The device or dongle you connected to has new features for USB-C that your PC (or phone) doesn’t support. To connect your iPadto high-resolution displays, use a USB-C cable that supports high-bandwidth connections, such as the cable included with the display, the Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Cable (USB-C to USB-C),or the Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) Cable(sold separately). 2 To charge your iPhone or earlier-model iPad that has a Lightning port, connect it to your iPadusing the Apple USB-C to Lightning Cable (1 m). If you have a Lightning to USB cable, you can combine it with the Apple USB-C to USB Adapter, then connect the adapter to your iPad. NOTE 2: When I first plugged my power cord into the multiport adapter, it displayed some weird behavior where the Driver Install prompt went away and the "charging" icon would show briefly, then disappear. I restarted my laptop with everything still plugged in and then the Driver Install prompt stayed visible.

Look for hubs that offer passthrough charging, so you can charge your laptop even though you are using up one of the laptop’s USB-C ports for the hub itself. Most don’t ship with a charger, so you’ll need to add your own, and remember that it needs to be a 100W charger to give 85W and above charging if offered by the hub. Lower wattage chargers are fine but will limit the hub’s charging potential. The Satechi Pro Hub Max, available in either Silver or Space Gray, features USB4 ports that are both compatible with Thunderbolt and can reach the same 40Gbps maximum throughput. If you have two iPadmodels with USB-C ports, you can connect them directly with a USB-C cable. One iPadwill draw power from the other. If you want to change which iPadcharges, unplug the USB-C cable and then reconnect them.Your PC has a low battery, so it has temporarily limited the amount of power it can provide to the device. Your USB-C Power Cord must be plugged directly into your multiport adapter (which is plugged into your laptop) when doing the reboot. Having the adapter plugged into one port, while the power cord is plugged into another of your laptop's ports will not work. Make sure your PC (or phone), the external display, and the cable all support DisplayPort or MHL alternate modes. Also included are an SD card reader (that can support a microSD card with an adapter). This is rated at UHS-I (104MBps) so not the fastest but speedier than some other hubs tested here offer. Make sure the device or dongle is connected to the USB-C port on your PC that supports the correct Alternate Mode. For example, a DisplayPort Alternate Mode adapter should be connected to the USB-C port on your PC that supports DisplayPort Alternate Mode.
