About this deal

This helmet has earned a 5-star safety rating from the influential Virginia Tech, which researches helmets with a view to reducing concussions. With several large vents for ventilation at the front and side of the helmet (12 in total) we found it plenty breathable and weren’t too sweaty after an hour-long ride in 30-degree weather (with 72 per cent humidity). There’s also a gutter action brow pad to ensure sweat doesn’t run into your eyes.

Folks make compromises all the time in the name of good looks. While there are compromises to be made with the Thousand Heritage helmet, its good looks and solid feature set outweigh them. Comfort & Fit – Mine was a little bit larger than I expected. Also, the fit of the Heritage model is slightly different compared to traditional helmets where you can make adjustments by turning the knob behind the head. I made the fit better by adjusting the straps on the helmet. Thousand claims that they will replace your helmet if it gets stolen. You don’t need to register for any program either. Although, you will have to send them a claim. Either way, I hope that your helmet doesn’t get stolen! The Heritage helmet is available in three sizes and a broad array of colors. I received the Thousand Heritage helmet in size small and the ‘Speedway Creme’ colorway. Thousand doesn’t have a quoted weight, but my personal helmet weighed in at 440 grams.

Should you suffer an accident, POC wants to ensure rescue services can reach you in a timely fashion. There’s an NFC chip which provides access to your medical ID from the twICEme app – important if you’re not conscious. Setting up is a bit of a faff, but so worth it.

Pros: Hi-vis coating; versatile for road or commute; most comfy helmet we tested; great look Cons: Would like more coverage at base of skull; can get warm I wish I could consider myself an aesthete or someone who cares deeply about the presentation of themselves and their belongings. Pros: Great price for previously premium tech; 5-star safety rating, good ventilation; secure fit Cons: Can feel quite bulky Debra is our do-it-all gal. She helps manage social media, sorts thru your questions and comments, and occasionally jumps in to test and review gear as well. Thousand’s ideology — minimalistic, functional style with important features should get more people to wear helmets.Faux leather (or vegan leather) looks good, doesn’t wear with sweat, and still offers a premium feel over traditional nylon straps. (Image: Alvin Holbrook/CyclingTips) After the loss of her friend in a cycling-related accident, Gloria decided that something needs to change. She collaborated with her friends and started Thousand Helmets – a company that makes helmets that you actually want to wear. The story behind Thousand’s helmets is actually more complicated than you would expect at first. We all have those friends who don’t wear helmets because they think they look silly. Gloria’s friend was one of those people. Smith’s includes its flagship, patented Koroyd material in the construction, which promises consistent energy absorption in the event of an accident: "Upon impact, the cores crush in a completely controlled manner, decelerating the energy from the impact and reducing the final trauma levels."

C’mon, this definitely looks more equestrian helmet than a vintage moto helmet. (Image: Alvin Holbrook/CyclingTips) For our review of the Heritage 2.0, my sister (who has a larger head than me) was surprised her measurements fell in between the medium and the large. Following the size chart advice to size down if in between sizes, she chose the medium and has been quite pleased. The big idea behind this helmet is that if you’re not a helmet fan, you can wear a helmet discretely. Also, there’s a small hatch with magnets on the bottom rear right side of the helmet on both the Heritage and Chapter models. The Heritage helmet has a retro vibe to it, like a 50s or 60s motorcycle helmet you'd expect to see paired with a shiny new Vespa scooter. It has a smooth, rounded shape, with a small lip for the visor and vents at the rear and on top. Unlike the large holes you get in many modern cycle helmets, the vents are barely noticeable at first glance.

Like any product though, improvements can be made. One of the biggest improvements that Thousand wanted to make to the helmet was making it fit more riders in an effort to be more inclusive to all. That meant introducing what they’re calling a “unique hybrid head form that is designed with both the Asian (round) and European (oval) head shapes.” Thousand points out that most helmet companies fit the latter headform, so the new Thousand headform should comfortably fit more riders globally. In our original review, we listed the limited ventilation as our main con. Considering you’re probably wearing this helmet because you’re fashion-minded, having sweaty hair when you get to your destination is less than ideal. MIPS is aboard, while the two-piece construction combines a tough outer shell with a polycarbonate inner that is fused to the mold. The Chronicle offers superb coverage, especially at the temple and the base of the skull, without the head-engulfing design we see from some MTB helmets. It has a 5-star safety rating from Virginia Tech. Thousand definitely has their own niche and they handle it nicely. There’s a strong story behind it, which is also what makes it work. Mission accomplished, the sport has become an important part of her life. Kristen’s favorite disciplines are mountain biking andbike commuting, although youcan also find her crankingout a century on her road bike and touring with her husband and son. If it has to do with two wheels, she enjoys doing it.You can also feel good about purchasing a Thousand helmet, with the company offsetting 110% of its carbon emissions for every helmet sold. If you’re between sizes, we’d advise getting the smaller option as they run kinda big. Pure Electric is the trading name of Pure Electric Ltd, New Farm Offices, Hartlake, Glastonbury, Somerset, BA6 9AB, United Kingdom / Company No: 11634997 / VAT No: GB 346 0709 05 Thousand have revised its Heritage helmet to include an updated fit for folks with rounder heads, far better ventilation, and a new fit system. Better yet, they’ve done all of this without changing the helmet’s characteristically good looks.
