This helmet has earned a 5-star safety rating from the influential Virginia Tech, which researches helmets with a view to reducing concussions. With several large vents for ventilation at the front and side of the helmet (12 in total) we found it plenty breathable and weren’t too sweaty after an hour-long ride in 30-degree weather (with 72 per cent humidity). There’s also a gutter action brow pad to ensure sweat doesn’t run into your eyes.
Folks make compromises all the time in the name of good looks. While there are compromises to be made with the Thousand Heritage helmet, its good looks and solid feature set outweigh them. Comfort & Fit – Mine was a little bit larger than I expected. Also, the fit of the Heritage model is slightly different compared to traditional helmets where you can make adjustments by turning the knob behind the head. I made the fit better by adjusting the straps on the helmet. Thousand claims that they will replace your helmet if it gets stolen. You don’t need to register for any program either. Following the size chart advice to size down if in between sizes, she chose the medium and has been quite pleased. The big idea behind this helmet is that if you’re not a helmet fan, you can wear a helmet discretely. Also, there’s a small hatch with magnets on the bottom rear right side of the helmet on both the Heritage and Chapter models.The Heritage helmet has a retro vibe to it, like a 50s or 60s motorcycle helmet you'd expect to see paired with a shiny new Vespa scooter. It has a smooth, rounded shape, with a small lip for the visor and vents at the rear and on top. Unlike the large holes you get in many modern cycle helmets, the vents are barely noticeable at first glance.
Like any product though, improvements can be made. One of the biggest improvements that Thousand wanted to make to the helmet was making it fit more riders in an effort to be more inclusive to all. That meant introducing what they’re calling a “unique hybrid head form that is designed with both the Asian (round) and European (oval) head shapes.” Thousand points out that most helmet companies fit the latter headform, so the new Thousand headform should comfortably fit more riders globally. In our original review, we listed the limited ventilation as our main con. Considering you’re probably wearing this helmet because you’re fashion-minded, having sweaty hair when you get to your destination is less than ideal. MIPS is aboard, while the two-piece construction combines a tough outer shell with a polycarbonate inner that is fused to the mold.
