Loyalty: Mr. Hu and Tom accept their duties out of loyalty to Mrs. Lee but continue out of loyalty to each other. Mistral and Monkey are enemies but unite with Mr. Hu because of loyalties. Sidney stays with Mr. Hu even after being accused of being a traitor. All of the characters fight for the phoenix out of loyalty to the Empress and her followers. This colorful fantasy seamlessly weaves ancient Chinese mythology into the contemporary city of San Francisco.The first book in The Tiger’s Apprenticetrilogy was published in 2003. It follows a young Chinese American boy named Tom Lee, who is living with his eccentric grandmother Mrs. Lee, in San Francisco. After Mrs. Lee’s death, Tom ends up in the care of Mr. Hu, the talking tiger who teaches Tom about magic. Tom has to learn how to wield magic while protecting the ancient phoenix from Vatten and the Clan of Nine. Tom is joined by a band of mythological misfits, including the exiled dragon Mistral, on his adventure.

The main plot points in the first book are expected to carry over into The Tiger’s Apprenticemovie. However, it’s possible that the animated film also introduces some changes from the novel. More movies beyond the first one have not been officially announced yet. The book trilogy also includes Tiger’s Blood, released 2005, and Tiger Magic, released 2006. Where and When To Watch

And thus begins an adventure to protect the magical egg, keeping it from falling into the hands of the enemy. Safe in Mr. Hu's antique shop in Chinatown, Mr. Hu reveals that the coral rose is actually the phoenix which has the power to transform evil beings into good ones. In ancient Chinese mythology, the creature Kung Kung attempts to use the phoenix to force human beings to obey him. After the Empress Nü Kua defeated Kung Kung, the phoenix chose to return to his egg and await a time of peace when his power would not be misused and the role of the Guardian is created to protect the phoenix. [1] (pg. 39–40) However, Kung Kung's lieutenant Vatten and the Clan of Nine (named for Vattens form as a nine-headed-serpent) have followed the Chinese Guardians to America and the phoenix will require both Mr. Hu and Tom to protect it. Tom, however, is afraid to truly take on the role of an apprentice Guardian. [1] (pg. 28) It isn't every day you meet a tiger. And certainly not a tiger in a suit and tie. And definitely not one who knows your first name. Paramount has set a Feb. 10, 2023, release date for the feature. Jane Startz and Sandra Rabins are producing, with Raman Hui and Kane Lee. Alex Loots is co-producing. Snake Eyes is currently slated for an Oct. 23, 2020, release, although the ongoing coronavirus pandemic could change those plans.

Near the end, Mr. Hu shares his soul to save Tom’s life; what Tom will be like as part tiger, and what the monsters will try next to procure the object, must wait for the second entry in this simultaneously gentle and suspenseful series. Good vs. Evil: the two sides are clearly marked in the struggle for the phoenix. Vatten and the Clan of Nine are evil, taking power and control through violence. In contrast, the guardians of the phoenix fight to protect the innocent and show mercy on their enemies.

Davig Magee ( Life of Pi), Harry Cripps and Kyle Jarrow worked on the script, which adapts the first book. Tiger’s Blood and Tiger Magic were the other titles in the trilogy that was steeped in the mythology of the Chinese Zodiac.
