About this deal

The novel creates sweeping new lore, from the village of Salaama to the Fae’s terror on mankind to the politics of Balwain’s land. Which part of the novel’s lore did you want to learn more about? But there is an old house, near the hospital grounds that once belonged to a missing author. Something wants Ceres to enter the home and into the memories of Ceres's childhood days. She is drawn into the folklore which her father loved, to a land with magical and interesting beings.

But an old house on the hospital grounds, a property connected to a book written by a vanished author, is calling to Ceres. Something wants her to enter, to journey to a land colored by the memories of childhood and the folklore beloved by her father—a land of witches and dryads, giants and mandrakes; a land where old enemies are watching and waiting. . . . For anyone who loved THE BOOK OF LOST THINGS and for all readers who enjoy dark, beautifully written fables that explore the heart of the human condition: love, loyalty and sacrifice. While this book can be read as a stand-alone, I'd recommend reading THE BOOK OF LOST THINGS first. That way you'll recognize some of the characters and know more about their history.Phoebe, an eight year old girl, has been severely injured in a car accident, and has been left in a comatose state. Her mother, Ceres, constantly reads to her, especially fairy tales. When the hospital can no longer help her, Phoebe is transferred to a chronic care facility, funded by the legacy of the missing author of The Book of Lost Things, and located very close to his crumbling and deserted home. When Ceres explores the house, she somehow finds herself transported into the world of The Book of Lost Things. What then transpires is a joy to read, filled with both wonderful characters, and ones that are pure evil. As always, Connolly’s writing just blows me away, especially when he talks about the importance and the meaning of books and stories. While there are references to environmental pollution, the reader isn’t hit over the head with them, yet the concerns are made very clear. I have to say this book felt like a warm and comforting hug. There's so many beats done perfectly. Ceres is a great character. I did have questions about why Connolly chose to de-age her. It just didn't add to the story and I thought it was weird. Book lovers and fans of John Connolly will not be disappointed by this remarkable standalone novel’ INDEPENDENT Retroland: A Reader’s Guide to the Dazzling Diversity of Modern Fiction – A critical machete wielded mercilessly ]

In 2006, John Connolly gifted us with THE BOOK OF LOST THINGS, a brilliant work of dark fantasy. It was quite a departure from his decades-long series featuring Charlie Parker, a thriller saga tinged with just the right amount of supernatural influence. It was the type of story that could appeal to both adults and children and called to mind the work of masters like C.S. Lewis and Lewis Carroll. All of which goes some way toward explaining how I came to write The Land of Lost Things. Had I written a sequel to The Book of Lost Things in the years immediately after its publication, in 2006, it would probably have repeated much of what was in that first book, because I hadn’t changed enough. If it didn’t disappoint readers, the novel would have disappointed me. It would have been another book about childhood, or maybe adolescence; a little different, but not different enough. What I love most about The Land of Lost Things is how perfectly normal and abnormal it is. The plot starts off with the helpless feeling of a mother who loves her daughter so much yet her daughter is currently just like a doll to her. Ceres is struggling. She has no one to turn to, although part of her likes being alone. Then we have the strangeness of the book as we move into the realms of witches, fairies, fae, etc. Both parts are perfectly blended.Retreating to their base, Sora remarks some sculptures she dubs amazing, to which Cole explained Geo made them, satisfying her as she explained her parents never understood her interests, and continues doubting if her Technology is still Riyu's. Nya then wonders if the Merge created new Elemental Masters before spotting the Hoarder, but it cannot approach their base. Inside, they meet another member called Bonzle before Cole then explained all the Finders, including Geo, ran away from their homes, forgotten by their people, and cannot leave the Land of Lost Things ever. Hearing a noise, Cole guides the girls to the cause, a machine that is old Imperium tech, powered by, to the girls' surprise: the Dragon Core they'd been searching for, but Cole wouldn't let them have it, unless there is a new energy source. Offering a great experience to the reader is important to Connolly – he says after 25 years, he’s determined not to disappoint:

You are the sum of the things that you’ve read, the things that frighten you, the things that you love. So it uses fantasy, but it tries to use it in a slightly odd way, to explore these realities of being middle-aged." Nonetheless, those who loved The Book of Lost Things will not want to miss this second chance to revisit the world that, once upon a time, set their imaginations on fire. As a standalone novel, this new adventure should also work its magic on fans of dark fairy tales fused with contemporary life – Grimm’s for grown-ups. Driven by questions of sacrifice, loyalty and unconditional love, this fantasy is grounded by very real-world conditions of the human heart. Perhaps the answers to big questions such as these can only be found Elsewhere. Helen CullenThe novel features familiar creatures: the Fae, the harpies, the dryads, and more. Whether it be other fantasy novels or resources on mythology, look into them and discuss the differences between the author’s depictions of these fantasy creatures and your observations of them in other media.
