About this deal

Different curtain headings will create distinctive looks. The most common style is a pencil pleat but, for a more tailored formal finish, a pinched pleat works well. Alternatively, for an informal effect, try a cottage pleat or tie-tops. A valance heading, where a section of fabric lies over the front top edge of the curtain (shown right), is great for making a feature of a coordinating design on the reverse. Curtains and poles are available from DIY superstores such as B&Q, and other local hardware merchants, with an option to suit every taste and style. With the measuring and cutting behind you, this part will feel like a breeze. Start by hemming the sides of each panel with a sewing machine or iron-on hem tape. Remember that you planned for a 3/4″ seam allowance, but the overall width is a flexible measurement since the curtains are gathered. Besides shelves, you can also use this method to hide the TV or any other type of screen you want to protect when it isn’t in use. 6.Sliding Doors Granted, this solution works best for large shelving units, especially in kitchens and pantries. If you want to cover smaller ones, any of the suggestions above will work nicely instead. Covering Shelves Without Doors: Final Thoughts

Make sure the fabric you buy, which is measured in yards, will accommodate the height without having to sew two pieces together. This is rarely an issue unless the cabinets are pantry or closet height. Most fabric is at least 44-55″ from selvage to selvage. Determine how much yardage to buy based on 1.5 to two times more than the width of your cabinet to allow for a full gather. Also, add enough for the hem and casings. More on that below. The rods will show when the panels are open, but they will be hidden when the curtains are closed. Why Curtains? The Craftsman Store– Another excellent resource from Scott Sidler of The Craftsman Blog. The Craftsman Store is a cozy online hardware store full of books, tools, and supplies. To find the correct width, simply measure across the top of the window, then across the middle and bottom. Cabinet height– 24 1/4″ (interior measurement from top to bottom shelf directly behind the cabinet frame) PLUS 4 inches extra to allow for the curtain rod casing. (Remember, fabric is most often 45-55″ selvage to selvage, so no special accommodations are necessary.) Window blinds are currently more popular than curtains. They are highly functional, versatile and stylish, but can be difficult to clean. You can't always pop them into the washing machine, as you can with many curtains, but the benefits outweigh the cleaning hassle. Building Regulations & Planning Permission for Curtain and Blind Fittings If you want to turn covering your shelves into a real DIY project, this option is perfect for you. You will need foam boards, some wallpaper, scissors, and a lot of patience. Are you looking for something that will cover your shelves without actually closing them off fully? In that case, you can try putting up a few pots of creeper plants.

Cabinet width (30″) – This measurement is more flexible. Gathers hide flaws and hemming this kind of project does not require 100% accuracy. Remember to add 1.5 to 2 times the cabinet width. Then, allow for 3/4″ or so for each hem. My curtains are two panels each, so four total hems (left and right side of each panel) which equal six extra inches. The extra amount for gathers was 20″ which fell between 1.5 and two times greater than my cabinet width. Here’s the math: 30+ 6+20=56. Bamboo is increasingly popular for this reason, plus it has added durability and is very eco-friendly. The only potential problem is finding panels that will fit your shelves. But the selection is pretty varied, so it shouldn’t be too hard to find something that fits your needs. 10. Fabric Draperies

Choose fabrics wisely – cotton and linen have a relaxed quality and suit most rooms. Heavyweight velvets have an opulent appearance and suit period homes and certain rooms, such as bedrooms or living areas. Avoid using silk in moist environments, as it can rot. A decoration tip is to install roller blinds behind your curtains, in a complementary colour. This adds an extra element of depth to the room. For everyone that doesn’t have enough floor space to have shelves with doors, you can install a slider model instead. As their name suggests, these doors slide to the side instead of opening like regular ones, making them a great choice for small spaces. Making the casings requires a little more care since we want the curtains to hang taut from top to bottom. Based on the prior measurements, we allowed two inches for each casing. Start by turning under 1/2″ on the top and bottom just like you did for the first step of the hem. Press with a hot iron. Next, fold the edge you ironed 1 1/2″ to make the casings on the top and bottom and press lightly. The raw edge will be hidden, just like the hem. A seam gauge is handy for this part. Hem – the edge of fabric that is turned under and sewn or fused with iron-on tape. The hem makes the project look finished, and it prevents the raw edge of the material from fraying or unraveling.
