About this deal

DJI RS 2 features an advanced 3D Focus System, upgrading the DJI Ronin-S focus wheel and adding ToF sensors for precise autofocusing even when using manual lenses and/or shooting in low light environments. This intelligent upgrade makes a world of difference, giving you exceptional autofocus in demanding shooting environments. DJI RS 2: Improved Battery Performance In terms of fuel efficiency, it holds up well for its engine category, offering a practical range of about 560 kilometers on a full tank of its 14-liter fuel capacity. The DJI Ronin RS-2 and RSC-2 look rather similar in name, and in design. They offer a lot of the same great features, but the RSC-2 is designed for smaller, mirrorless cameras and costs a lot less, and the RS-2 is a little more pricey but it can handle anything up to an ARRI ALEXA Mini. In this review, I’m looking at the more expensive Combo kit which includes the added extras including the focus motor, phone adapter, RavenEye and plenty more.

Instantly you can feel that there is less room for manoeuvre than with the Ronin-S, and with the wires, screen and focus handle it all starts to feel a little cramped. DJI has officially authorized Tilta with the development protocols for all the peripheral interfaces. All products have been carefully tested by the DJI engineering team as well as a series of test/development shoots to improve its design, operation, and durability. But as you can see with Peter’s comparison, there is virtually no difference in the quality of the stabilization that you can achieve from either the RS2 or the RSC2. So when it comes down to it, if you’re only going to be flying cameras that are smaller, there is very little point in spending the additional money on the RS 2. DJI’s new RS 2 and RSC 2 are more than just a single-handed gimbal. Improving upon the previous generation on every level, DJI has made their new gimbals more lightweight, intelligent, and with more options. The collaboration between Tilta and DJI has brought RS 2 and RSC 2 to a whole new level. We have worked for months to develop a range of tools for filmmakers looking to get the most out of their gimbal.

The gimbal is reportedly able to support a payload of up to 10lbs for up to 12 hours (if properly balanced). For the majority of our testing, the team used the Canon EOS R or R6 and the 24-105mm or the 14mm. This combo doesn’t come close to maxing out its motors, but no matter what we put on it, the motors gave no lag or resistance/strain. Unless you’re getting into big cinema rigs, the Ronin RS 2 seems capable of handling any dslr or mirrorless combo you can throw at it. Setup Is Easy Update the firmware for the DJI RavenEye Image Transmission System using the DJI Ronin app by connecting the RavenEye via Wi-Fi. Do not disconnect the DJI Ronin app and DJI RavenEye Image Transmission System during the update process. The suspension is skillfully tuned, offering a supple ride that adeptly handles both mild, low-speed undulations and instills confidence at higher speeds. It proficiently soaks up the majority of rough bumps, shielding the rider from their jarring effects.

Looking at the image below, you can see the actual difference between the gen 1 and 2 gimbals. While it doesn’t seem like a lot in the photograph, every millimeter and ounce freed up makes a difference! The big feature that the team could not cover though was the vertical grip add-on. It wasn’t included with our kit so we can’t comment on the usefulness of this feature (yet). That said, let’s dive right into what you get with this gimbal and the features it provides. DJI has taken the world of gimbal stabilizers by storm since the introduction of their first handheld gimbal, the DJI Ronin 1, in 2014 and even though there has been no shortage of competition, DJI has maintained that market dominance through innovation, refinement, and adapting to their customers needs. RavenEye is the stand out feature of the Combo kit that I tested, it’s truly amazing, and the signal is just about as robust as they come.TVS has left no detail unattended when it comes to equipping the Ronin with all the expected features of a contemporary, "connected" motorcycle. The standard single-pod offset LCD display includes smartphone connectivity (exclusive to the TD variant we have here). However, all the "smart" data is consolidated into a compact digital inset, which may require some adjustment.

New* RavenEye Transmission System– gives operators a simplified way to get remote camera viewing and parameter control. This system transmits 1080p video from up to 200 m away with a latency of just 60 ms, letting users focus on getting the perfect shot without worrying about equipment. If you are working on a professional project with a big camera crew, this new DJI RS 2 feature conveniently provides everyone with a clear view of the action. While DJI RS 2 might look similar to its predecessor, there are some key design differences that you should be aware of. The two most notable DJI RS 2 upgrades are a 1.4-inch full-color touchscreen and a carbon-fiber construction. Carbon fiber not only decreases the overall device weight, it also allows for heavier payloads, up to 4.5 kg (10 lbs) tested. DJI RS 2 also has a more ergonomic overall look and feel, which rounds a gimbal that is lighter, supports heavier cameras, and is easy than ever to use. There is a ton of good information here. One extra note is to disable selfie mode to prevent accidentally activating it if you accidentally tap the trigger one too many times. You’ll also want to enable silent mode to prevent any notification noises from being played—always a good call. To be honest, it’s probably best to just shut off all the modes you aren’t planning on using. At the front of the RS 2, above the trigger, there is a dial. It can be set to many different controls and adjust the dial speed. Options include camera settings like aperture and ISO as well as gimbal settings like roll axis.Out of the box, the set up was incredibly straight forward and easy. We tried out the focus motor and it was nice to control it from the scroll wheel. If I would have connected another scroll wheel I could have had one scroll wheel control the motor and the built-in wheel control a setting in the camera. Very useful on long shoots and run & gun moments. In use, the power of the small motor is incredible and enables you to easily capture that professional, smooth fluid motion that these devices have been designed to enable. The one issue I did find was getting the initial positions of the arms correct. On the old Ronin-S, there was always a bit of a battle to subtly adjust the arms positions; this subtlety is even more difficult with these new carbon arms.

Adding a touchscreen was incredibly helpful. It means you don’t have to dive into the mobile app to make some of the changes and can more easily make adjustments in the field. It also shows off the current modes and settings, which can be helpful if you have multiple operators for the same gimbal as there were only LED lights available. As before the operating time in ideal conditions is 12 hours, and a BG30-1950mAh 15.4 LiPo 4S is used to power the RS 2. This has a charging time of 1.5h, which isn’t at all bad. Through these standardised connectors, the DJI RS 2 can be part of a much larger rig. Not having access to this type of set-up I couldn’t test it but it looks impressive. That’s not all it is also smaller, which has been made possible by the advances in technology. The new RS 2 measures in at 410 x 260 x 195mm including the grip but without the extension, grip added. Then there was the size, it just felt too small, with the Ronin-S I can find a balance, but with the DJI RS 2, it all felt far too top-heavy. It may have been lighter, but I couldn’t hold that lighter weight for as long as I do with the heavier weight Ronin-S. Just as the the DJI RS 2 is a successor to the Ronin-S, the RSC 2 is a successor to DJI’s Ronin-SC. The updated gimbal is constructed of steel and aluminum, which work to increase rigidity while reducing the overall weight of the unit compared to the Ronin-SC by 35%. It also has a smaller physical footprint with a folded size of 180mm x 190mm (7” x 7.5”) — roughly the size of an A5 sheet of paper.
