You aren’t going to find deep, strategic game play here, but it’s also not as simple as something like Risk. The Queen’s Gambit, Netflix’s surprise smash-hit mini-series about chess prodigy Beth Harmon, is getting a tabletop adaptation that somehow isn’t just a chess set.It’s rare to see a licensed game, partially a movie based one, that plays this well. I don’t have a whole lot to gripe about with The Queen’s Gambit. If you are a Star Wars fan, or even just a miniatures fan, try and find a copy if you can. Final Thoughts: In The Queen's Gambit: Das Damengambit, you can try to outwit your fellow players by playing with as much foresight as she did. Each of the 2-4 players has their own gambit piece that moves across the chessboard, and your turns are always planned three moves in advance by laying down cards upon which chess pieces are depicted. On your turn, you reveal your first card; move the gambit piece according to what's depicted on that card, ideally capturing chess tiles in the process; then refill your row by placing a third card in your personal queue. While true, you won’t have the deep level strategic game play of other war games, but there are still a lot of hard choices to be made each turn. The Queen’s Gambit has 4 different theaters of battle going on simultaneously. To give you an idea of how the game plays, let me talk about why you can’t ignore any of those areas. More experienced chess aficionados can enjoy The Queens Gambit at a grandmaster’s level when playing against opponents who know how to apply many advanced tactical principles. Utilizing sophisticated endgame theory and strategic principles such as prophylaxis or zugzwang will give skilled players an advantage over unaware opponents who do not know how to recognize these concepts or use them beneficially when they arise during play. Ultimately, this means that no matter your experience or skill set, The Queens Gambit has something for everyone and affords every player an enjoyable gaming experience tailored precisely to their individual abilities.
