Some new mattresses (particularly memory foam) can come with an off-gassing smell that is a little unpleasant. To assess just how much of a smell the Otty Original Hybrid brought with it, I left the windows closed for a couple of days while it reached its full height. While there was a definite odour in the room, it wasn’t particularly offensive and didn’t hang around for too many days after the room was well ventilated.

OTTY is taking the mattress market and turning it on its head in the UK. It’s a lesser-known brand but is surprisingly affordable, and is shaking up the somewhat stale market. Up against it for my comparison here is the UK’s leading mattress brand – Emma. It’s an extremely well-received mattress and the market leader. Two tough contenders, then. All jokes aside, this one truthfully strikes gold in terms of support as far as mid-range foam pillows go. There isn't much we'd do differently even if we were to design a pillow for optimal support. Is OTTY Deluxe pillow eco-friendly or sustainable? For instance, if you sleep on your side, you may want something with a bit more loft. And if you’re someone who is prone to overheating at night, it’s important to be aware that some pillows – particularly memory foam ones – may feel warmer than others. Different sleepers will get on better with different pillows, and it’s important to bear that in mind when testing.

The mattress has an ‘Airflow system’ which sees small perforations throughout that allow air to circulate freely throughout the mattress, removing excess heat. Testing this mattress in winter in a room that was 18 degrees, I didn’t notice feeling either too warm or too cool. You won't need more than a glance and a single hand stroke to be amazed by this pillow cover. We know we didn't. OTTY are generally cheaper than Emma Hybrid mattresses; in fact they are generally one of the cheapest mattress brands in the UK. To investigate further I used some wine glasses and some weights to mimic someone else in the bed moving positions and getting in and out of bed. I placed an empty wine glass in the centre of the mattress and dropped a 8kg weight next to it – at 4,10 and 25 inches away. Another appealing feature is the amount of choice you get when it comes to size and feel. It’s available in soft, soft/medium and medium/firm variants, as well as standard (50 x 75cm), superking (50 x 90cm) and square (65 x 65cm) sizes. This is a well-performing pillow in our opinion. It's medium firm, so it will be a solid fit for a lot of folks. It's right down the middle where it's supportive and cosy at the same time.
