About this deal

The shooting is fun. The cameras are fun. The developing is, if not fun, at least interesting, allowing plenty of variables and room for experimentation and a sense of suspense. The resulting film photos are fun. Darkroom printing is fun. Even organizing our negatives is satisfying in a Marie Kondo sort of way.

Cameras – LCD screen is heavily worn either by de-lamination or has scratches to it. Rubber grips are starting to come away from the body. Digressing slightly the ES-2 is a "sliding tube" with a moderately variable length - to allow for some cropping - either intended or because a slide mount is a little smaller than 24x36mm. The worst part so far is getting those negatives to behave. Especially the ones that are badly curled. But it sure is fun seeing all those old photos of the kids. Today I'm working on 1986. Digitizing film is the process of creating digital data from the image information found in photographic film. In the past, a film scanner was commonly used to scan in negatives and slides, however with the introduction of high-resolution digital cameras like the D850 DSLR, you can now produce a digitized copy of your 35mm negatives or slides using the D850 and the ES-2 Negative Digitizer. Is there any benefit into using the Nikon ES-2 Film Digitizing Adapter over using slide scanners such as this one from Kodak ?Well fortunately I do have both a 60 AFD and a 60 AFS, which was why I gained interest in the ES-2. I don't have a D850 so conversion will have to be in post.

ES-2 with moderately adjustable spacer on a 60mm G. The slide holder is "push-pull" type as on old slide projectors before slide trays an semi AF focus slide projectors arrived. The hardest part when using the ES-2 Adapter is getting the framing right, particularly if it’s a dark slide or dense negative. Once you’ve got the position right, there’s a screw on the top of the adapter that can be tightened to help keep it in place. However, it’s easy to give the holder a nudge out of place as you push to the next frame. The demand for digitizing film comes not only from hobbyists and photographers with large image collections that were captured on film, but also from young photographers enjoying the recent boom in taking photos using film cameras and having the results digitized at a photo lab. The Negative Digitizer There’s a zoom mechanism built into the ES-2 Adapter that allows you to adjust the framing of the slide. With the 60mm f/2.8G ED lens on the D850, I found that this had to be around its shortest point for the slide to fill the frame. Performance

As recommended by Nikon, I used natural light to illuminate the slides and negatives that I digitised, pointing the diffuser towards the sky. It’s also possible to use an artificial light source, but this needs to be uniform in both colour and brightness.
