The highly compressed hemp creates a damping effect between their fibers. This produces a fuller sound, comprised of a noticeable low end and a top end that extends smoothly to its limits. The hemp may be doing the heavy lifting, but the hemphone is a joint effort. It's a better match for the GS3000e than the Grado G if you don't intend to EQ, and is noticeably clearer than the Hemp with Geekria L. This all but confirms that the Grado G adds the 5k-6k treble spike to every model, no matter what the tuning is, so it's inherently a flawed pad that must be corrected with EQ. Whoever designed the Geekria L should get a raise, because now I suspect it's better than the Grado L on every single model.

Professional Series

With 7 different pads at my disposal, all with their own characteristics, it's time to listen away! I'll list 3 criteria: bass, treble, and full, on a scale of -5 to +5. 0 is ideal for my taste, so the closer to 0, the better, but note that 0 isn't necessarily perfect. Shifting from 0 leans toward too little or too much. Full is my subjective opinion on how thin or how veiled the overall sound is. All tests were done with no EQ and no ASP from my Pro iCAN. For example, Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters’ energy and vocals are palpable in the presentation of the song, “Paranoid Eyes”. His voice is filled with enthusiasm and excitement. The wetness of his lips comes through clearly, but not distracting with these headphones. The piano melody played throughout Paranoid Eyes is full and filled with deep bravado. After the impression I was left with Pink Floyd, I was even more excited to test and listen to Patricia Barber’s “Company.”As I said before, Grado headphones have a DIY like design, and the Hemp headphones are no different. The overall design is simple but elegant. The hemp material is highly compressed, creating a dampening effect that’s meant to expand the width of the frequency spectrum. The maple housing works in conjunction with the hemp balancing the overall output. This makes for a more full, engaging sonic quality. Grado’s brand new dynamic drivers are specifically suited for this material. They’re de-stressed which controls the diaphragms resonance supporting a tolerance of .05dB. We dig out a pair of first-generation RS1 and, as expected, are treated to an open, forward and insightful sound. Switch to the new RS1x, however, and the presentation is not only clearer and notably more transparent but also faster and livelier, making the veteran pair sound somewhat ponderous in comparison. The extent of the RS1x’s fleet-footedness has us drawing similar comparisons with rivals such as the Beyerydnamic T1 (3rd Generation), even if they chalk up points for their greater solidity, refinement and deeper bass. We commented on the new driver’s punchy nature in our SR325x review, and that talent certainly manifests in these Reference Series headphones too. Of course, you have to provide the Grados with a quality signal. If that 3.5mm connection tempts you into thinking that a phone, laptop or budget music player are going to be ideal partners, you’d be wrong. Gradomaiseen tyyliin Hemp vaikuttaa aluksi hieman ohuen ja hyökkäävän kuuloiselta – paremman termin puuttuessa kuvailisin Hemp:in keskiääniä “hönkäisevän” kuuloisiksi. Was soll ich sagen – Ehre wem Ehre gebührt. Verarbeitung & Tragekomfort This is a Grado. It is very mid-forward and so well equipped for vocals. Grado likely always will be the go-to for this type of thing, if you want a smaller headphone. The Hemp is noticeably more forward than the Grado GW100 that I reviewed not too long ago.
