About this deal

The top of the ACE family, the 400i has new Iron Audio feature, a powerful DD coil, a higher frequency, and volume control headphones. Up to eight inches depth on dry sand and ‘normal’ soils you’ll find jewelry, relics, coins, and trash. DD coils are far superior to conventional coils in terms of efficiency. It's more reliable and sensitive to small objects or metals with lower conductivity levels. This is because when you're looking, the unique shape produces a particular electromagnetic field pattern. Rather than the conical magnetic field pattern associated with conventional units, you get a broader, highly focused search field. As a result, it will go deeper into the ground. Where are the Best Places for a Beginner to Metal Detect? – Just like the title says, this article points the beginner to the highest probability places.

You’re not getting a standard circular search coil with the ACE 400. Instead, it’s equipped with a DD search coil that measures about 8.5 inches wide and 11 inches long. Dubbed the “PROformance Coil,” this unique component enhanced performance tenfold. This is great if you’re hunting with a friend who also has the ACE 400 – or even a different brand detector operating at the same frequency. The detectors will end up detecting each other if you get too close. Things like bottle caps and washers will look and sound just like a coin signal. And you end up wasting valuable time digging up trash. The ACE 400 includes a higher, 10 kHz frequency to provide better sensitivity to low and medium conductivity targets, such as gold and lead. The detector’s Frequency Adjust feature allows users to easily toggle between slight frequency shifts to help eliminate interference from other detectors or power sources. The ACE 400 ships with an 8.5”x11” DD-configuration PROformance searchcoil that has proven to be very popular with the company’s previous ACE™ 350 and EuroACE™ detectors. The ACE 400 includes five discrimination modes, electronic pinpointing, sensitivity adjustment, and High-Resolution Iron Discrimination.Despite its low price tag, the Garrett ACE 400 is a well-built metal detector. It has all of the necessary changes to be designated as a high-performing entry-level metal detector. There are eight sensitivity levels to choose from. In my experience, each degree of sensitivity corresponds to roughly 1 inch of depth most of the time. It isn't a precise calculation. Even if my sensitivity is set to level 1, I can hear stuff 2 inches deep. And when my sensitivity is set to level 8 I can hear targets 10 inches deep, making it a deep seeking metal detectors. Iron audio may not always be useful; it all depends on the terrain. You'll probably want to turn it off if there's a lot of iron trash around to prevent getting bombarded with signals. Many more treasures can be found several inches under the water's surface. Remember that the device itself is not water resistant so you can't just submerge the whole thing in water. Audio I mentioned at the start there was an iron audio button on the control box. This is an upgrade on the 350 and allows you to hear certain iron targets depending on your discrimination.

The machines are comparable in length and weight. They both extend from 40” to 53” and have three parts for easy storage and travel. Below is a general guide to the Ace 400 Numbers. Getting the machine to accurately identify your find has a lot to do with the shape, size and obviously the material. Target ID Range

Digital Target ID

There is an LCD display and six control buttons on the front panel of the control unit. One of the main complains of Garrett metal detectors users was that the old version of ACE didn’t have VDI with digits from 0 to 99 on the LCD display.

The ACE 400 is part of Garrett’s most popular line of products (we have compared the best Garrett metal detectors in this article). While the brand does offer heavy-duty detectors for professional applications and serious hobbyists, the ACE line focuses on affordability and accessibility. Both machines have Garrett’s clear and easy to understand display. There are three buttons which are mode, sensitivity, and power plus a large numeric target ID scale. Custom mode so you can choose a mixture of the above or your own special recipe. The ACE 400 saves your custom mode so it’s ready to go next time. Higher frequency metal detectors have shorter wavelengths and are better for finding small things like tiny gold nuggets whereas lower frequencies penetrate further into the ground. DisplayDespite its affordable price tag, the ACE 400 does very well across the board in terms of performance. It has some unique features that are typically reserved for more expensive models. 1.
