If the stainless steel is scratched, using this cleaning method can often help reduce the appearance of the scratches. For visible scratches, there is not an approved repair method to cover the scratches. Be sure that your refrigerator is not installed next to any heat producing appliance, such as a dishwasher or range. Also, make sure your appliance has a #4 brushed finish. Most stainless appliances have a #4 finish, but there are some outliers. In addition, the #4 finish can vary slightly between appliance manufacturers, so you generally won’t be able to re-brush only a tiny scratched area. You generally need to re-brush the entire panel. Stainless steel scratch repair options The three products that you’re most likely to come across are Scratch-B-Gone, Rejuvenate Stainless Steel Scratch Eraser, and the ScratchPro kit for Polishing and Repairing Sinks. Tape off all adjacent panels of the appliance with blue tape, and protect other surfaces of the appliance.

When it comes to your chosen repair kit, if you can’t get hold of a kit specifically for your brand or colour of appliance, find the closest colour you can and just make sure to test it out on a hidden area of your appliance first. Remember that the colour might look a little different when it’s fully dry. For tougher scratches, it may be necessary to rub them out with an abrasive pad. You’ll need a scouring pad or scrubbing sponge, plus some cooking oil (olive oil works well). Once the scratch is removed to your satisfaction, wipe the area with a wet rag in the direction of the grain. For best results, after removing scratches from stainless steel appliance with this kit, use Rejuvenate Stainless Steel Cleaner and Polish to put the finishing touch on your stainless steel restoration job. After a bunch of trial and error in the stainless steel, I was able to remove the scratch and make the panel look pretty good with both drum sanders and the Walter brush. The scratch is still clearly visible, but the nice, clean original brushing is now covered with somewhat wavy brush lines (which you get because it’s hard to use sandpaper in an exactly straight line). Non-gel toothpaste can be used to remove scratches from stainless steel if you don’t have a stainless steel cleaner available. Dab a small amount of non-gel whitening toothpaste onto the scratch and rub in a circular, even motion. Wet the scratched area with a sponge or cloth saturated with water. Throughout the process, keep the surface wet.
