Many 3D printers are equipped with a Bowden extruder because it ensures high printing speeds and, in contrast to a direct drive extruder, applies less weight to the moving hot end. But Flsun has created something unique with the V400: the hotend and the extruder have been combined, resulting in a particularly compact and lightweight system. They probably succeed in bringing one of the lightest and at the same time fastest direct-drive extruders onto the market! Files are sliced in Cura just like any other printer, then are transferred to the V400 via the Moonraker plugin, dragging and dropping into Mainsail, or by using the supplied USB drive. A higher belt tension can be set by adding more 50 cent coins, and a lower belt tension can be set by removing 50 cent coins. I feel the need, the need for speed.

The correct toothed belt tension is indicated by a pointer that is vertical and parallel to the printer frame. In my case, this is achieved with 6 50 cent coins, i.e. 46.8 grams in weight. Firmware retraction gives an advantage compared to Slicer retraction, it can be modified during a print (from Mainsail or KlipperScreen) and therefore the same gcode can be printed with different parameters without the need to be re-sliced. I have found 2 tools that use the spring force of a 3D printout as their functional principle. Then upload printer.cfg, macros.cfg, neopixels.cfg and adxl345.cfg files located in Configurations directory. The FLSun V400 is simple to use, fun to watch and can save you loads of time. I’ve used it a lot for prototyping parts for an RC car I’m building – in draft mode the printer can blaze through filament in a fraction of the time needed on a standard printer. The prints it produces at speed are still of excellent quality, so there’s no reason to limit it to only test prints.
