About this deal

The Touchxel seemed a little noisier than the average air bed I tested, but this may be down to the fact that at the time of inflation it was late and I was tired. It’s constructed with 42 air coils for comfort, but I found the grooves on the top layer a little less inviting than some of the more streamlined designs. These grooves do provide grip, however, and kept me securely in place during the night. Fortunately there are lots of different styles depending on whether you’re looking for a portable one for camping or a luxury one to treat your overnight guests.

We found that the raised air beds in our test didn’t have any specific thermal insulating properties. To retain warmth, it’s advisable to place a rug or blanket under the air bed. Also add a blanket, or better still, a thermal mattress protector under your fitted sheet. Voited sells the CloudTouch indoor/outdoor camping blanket, that is both stylish and warm. A topper is a great way to change up the feel of your mattress without completely starting over with a new bed. These products typically add a few inches of pressure-relieving comfort to the top, but sinking into softness can reduce the amount of exposure your body has to circulating air and can often retain heat. If you’re looking for a blow-up mattresses for the great outdoors, you can discover more in our feature on best air beds for camping. For this review, we’ve mainly focussed on large air beds with built-in electric pumps. There is some crossover: respected camping brands such as Vango, Bestway, Hi Gear and Intex also offer blow-up beds for home use that have the height of a standard bed and are roomy enough for two. As was mentioned earlier, this is a point that is of particular concern when sleeping in a cold environment – such as outside while sleeping in a tent. Pump: For a super-easy-to-use air bed, you’ll want to opt for one that has a built-in pump, including manual, battery-operated, and plug-in. We’d suggest going for one with an electric option, as this will make the blowing-up-process faster. Now for everyone’s favourite part –the mattress and sleeping surface. The Aerobed Luxury Collection Raised Air Bed went all out with the mattress. But that was expected considering how much I had to cough up for the damn thing.

Thanks to the built in pump, all it takes is a little under 3 minutes to get the Aerobed luxury airbed fully inflated. The control panel consists of a dial that allows you to inflate, deflate, and even adjust the air levels to get the softness/firmness just how you like it. According to Lauren Fountain from the Sleep Foundation, to fix the leak, you’ll need to locate the hole and then clean the area. She goes on to say you then need to “use an adhesive and some plastic or vinyl patches to cover the leak” and “after letting the patch set for several hours, you can test the patch to ensure the mattress is no longer leaking”. We’ve brought our sleep expertise to bear on some of the top airbeds available and sorted them based on where and when they excel. Whether you need a space-saving option for visitors, something to tote on a camping trip, or an affordable short-term bed for your home, you’ll find excellent options on this list. 7 Best Air Mattresses Most manufacturers advise that children under eight should not sleep on an air bed. Each design will also have a maximum weight capacity for the user. The Bestway Fortech design has a total weight capacity of 350kg (55 stone), for example. It took around three minutes to inflate and deflate, making the Intex one of the faster-to-assemble air beds in this round up. The manual inflation port within the cord storage is also easy to find, which would come in useful if you’re camping and want to use your own standalone pump.

If you are tenting somewhere that the nighttime temperatures are going to drop significantly, you need to make sure your mattress is going to hold as much air as possible. Cold temperatures are going to cause the air to condense, meaning there won’t be as much left to support you in the morning as there was at night.

However, if this happens regularly, it’s probably due to a puncture of some kind. If this sounds like a problem you’re dealing with, fear not, as DIY repairs are very common within the air bed community.

Air chambers: Air beds with vertical air chambers are more comfortable because they work to distribute the weight. It’s worth noting that while air chambers that run side to side look more comfortable, they can sag when you lie down.If you’re looking for an all in one air bed to permanently call your own, then this is it right here. Where to buy? You love your animals and your sleep and shouldn’t have to sacrifice either to get through a night. If you are in the market for an air mattress, there are qualities to look for to ensure that you or your visitors do not wake up in the middle of the night in a slowly-deflating puddle of materials. For example, air beds that are not easy to puncture can help protect your sleep space from the curious claws and playful nips. With two drawstring pulls on either side, the bag that this air bed comes with is possibly the most practical of all the storage bags in this test. It’s also one of the lightest to carry. The built-in pump can be used for up to five minutes at a time to inflate and deflate, and I found that the bed was nicely blown up with a bit of squish at around the 4.5 minute mark. Lastly, there is the King size. If you’ve got the extra room and don’t mind paying more than what the Queen size will cost, the King is a great option. If you’re using it for visitors, they will definitely be happy for the extra sleep space you gave them! Another feature that was a must have for me is the built-in electric pump that lets you inflate and deflate the air bed in a matter of minutes. If you’ll be regularly inflating and deflating the bed, then you’ll appreciate the powerful pump.
