About this deal

So much emotion went into White Lightning. “By the time we put it to bed it was like we’d done group therapy,” Elliott recalls. “After that we needed something completely ridiculous.” adrenalize | full Official Chart History | Official Charts Company". That’s typical of Def Leppard, though. From the first, this was a band that gloried in the power of heavy metal’s musical gestures — the towering majesty of a power riff, the momentary freedom of a guitar break, the exhilaration of a singer’s scream — and as the group has grown, its ability to manipulate that vocabulary has expanded to the point that its songs have become mini-masterpieces of aural impact. I know it’s a terrible cliche, to say this is what he would have wanted ... We genuinely did think Steve would have wanted us to carry on. He wasn’t in a great place when he died. He’d been through rehab. He was a self-proclaimed alcoholic. We knew that. He would say, in his more morbid periods, ‘You guys would be better off without me’. We would rally around and go, ‘No, we wouldn’t – we don’t want to be without you’.”Le Détail des Albums de chaque Artiste – D". Infodisc.fr (in French). Def Leppard decided to take matters into their own hands and co-produce, along with engineer Mike Shipley, while placing Lange in the role of executive producer. Elliott described it as the “biggest risk” they’d taken. “But we went in with our eyes wide open, confident that we could do it,” he explained. Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad is more like Have You Ever Needed A Song So Bad ... and that song is Bringing on the Heartbreak. Def Leppard wrote "sadness" better in 1981. I Wanna Touch U And there are hooks of every sort on Adrenalize, from broad strokes like the gloriously harmonized chorus of “Heaven Is” to ear-catching details like the little yodel Elliott slips into “Personal Property.” Adrenalize is so relentlessly catchy that it almost seems as if the band is about to abandon its heavy-metal roots for the greener fields of hard pop. That’s not to say the album is any softer than its predecessors — certainly the crunchy guitars of “Tear It Down” or “Make Love Like a Man” are proof to the contrary — just that it’s not as noisily aggressive.NWOBHM, as Elliott has long pointed out, wasn’t necessarily a natural fit for Def Leppard. Even in their early days, their songs had a pop sparkle that set them apart from the hard-core moshers. Plus, Def Leppard saw themselves as DIY to their boots. “We were actually quite annoyed when we got lumped in with it, because once we started hearing these bands we thought most of them were shit,” the singer once stated.

Adrenalize debuted at No. 1 on both the UK Albums Chart [13] and, in the following week, on the U.S. Billboard 200. [14] It stayed at No. 1 of the Billboard chart for five weeks keeping Bruce Springsteen's Human Touch off the top spot, and spent 65 weeks on the charts in total. Take “Have You Ever Needed Someone So Bad” as an example. Although the title pretty much sums up the idea behind the tune, the band is wise enough to recognize that when it comes to love songs, what gets said matters far less than how it gets said. Thus, the heart of the song is its melodic development, the way Joe Elliott’s vocal builds from the breathy, low-key opening verse to the soaring, full-throated harmonies of the chorus. It’s so perfectly paced that you hardly need to hear the lyrics to understand what the song is saying; the sound says it all. Guld- och Platinacertifikat − År 1987−1998" (PDF) (in Swedish). Collenwas forced to channel his late bandmate duringthe sessions. He described it as “the weirdest thing ever.”“It was like talking to a ghost," he noted. "I’d done my parts, and I’d have to learn Steve’s parts as he played them. Although he didn’t play on it, he did through me. It was schizophrenic; his personality would come through.” Austriancharts.at – Def Leppard – Adrenalize" (in German). Hung Medien. Retrieved 25 September 2021. In Rolling Stone, JD Considine wrote: “There’s no overriding concept to the album, no sense of the group confronting its demons or wrestling with the problems of the world; instead, what we get is an unending string of energetic, hook-heavy, gosh-we-luv-’em songs about girls. A perfect Def Leppard album, in other words.” We finally got on the right path. I think there’s more to come. We can do it differently. It’s our best makeover and reinvention. It’s the same guys for the last 32 years. We know each other. We know how it works. That’s another similarity with U2. As a creative unit they know their limitations. That’s the great thing. We finally became the band we secretly wanted to be.”

There was a deeper realisation that for Elliott was heartbreaking: “Steve was the nicest guy in the world. But he was a very complex person. I’d known for years, but I didn’t know him at all. He had everything, yet he had nothing. You do your best to help. Taylor Swift’s album 1989 is called 1989 because that was the year she was born. Throughout 1988 she heard our music in her mother’s womb, non-stop. Her parents are big Def Leppard fans. Someone came up with a laptop to us and say, ‘Have you read this interview?’ It was with Taylor who, even then, was pretty big. She had been asked, ‘Would you ever consider working with another band?’ She said, ‘There’s only one band I would ever work with – and that’s Def Leppard’. We’re not the same. Of course we’re not the same. The Rolling Stones aren’t the same. They’re still The Rolling Stones. I have fantastic and fond memories of Steve. He was an incredibly creative soul. There isn’t a day he doesn’t come into our consciousness. He’s either on a retro T-shirt design I have to approve, or I walk past a poster that’s got his face on it.”
