About this deal

The book gets major points for the cover. So at least there’s that. I love each one in the series and the one that comes out in a couple months is the best one of all. The Somerset witches of 1664 confessed to something which sounds almost like teleportation, stating that their foreheads and wrists were first ‘anointed’ with a foul-smelling oil which carried them suddenly to their sabbat. 11. In 1429 she convinced the Dauphin Charles VII to let her demonstrate that she had the ability to match her ambitions and she led French forces to liberate the city of Orleans from an English siege. She was eventually taken prisoner by the Burgundians, allies of England, and turned over to the English who burned her at the stake as a witch on the argument that her claims of direct communication with God were heretical and an act of disobedience to the Church.

I received a copy of this book from the author and my review is in no way affected or influenced by receipt of this book** There’s nothing in this book that warrants anything harsher than a PG rating. With that said, I would say a reader as young as 10 could read this, though the length of the book might be intimidating for a younger reader. I would feel completely comfortable letting any age really read this. 🤷‍♀️

Portrayals of witchcraft in church records can be very amusing. Almost everything that was "known" at the time about witches was pure fiction, inventions by church authorities who were told that witches were a threat and so had to come up with something to describe. Their creations have passed on into popular cultural images of witches which continue to this day. Very little of people's understanding of witches has anything to do with older, pagan traditions which supposedly were the source of witches and witchcraft.

Russell, Jeffrey Burton. Witchcraft in the Middle Ages. Ithaca and London: Cornell University Press, 1972. The family dynamic had a massive saving grace: Leo. I would gladly read a book based entirely upon his character. Truthfully, he was my favourite character of the entire book. We all want a big brother just like him. He can be annoying, but he is always there for his sister. If I’m being honest, I feel as though he was the most fleshed out character in the book. There was more depth to him than any of the other characters. My only complaint is that he wasn’t in the book enough. He was deserving of so many more scenes. Honestly, he made the book more than worth it. Although Diana has untangled 3 knots, there’s still lots more to do. Now understanding the essence of this spell-making, Diana conjures the Rowan Tree again but this time a blazing phoenix bursts into her stomach and dissolves. Accusations of the kiss of shame were often raised in witchcraft and heresy inquisitions and trials. The Witches mark in modern times is viewed in a different light. Modern witches believe birthmarks, moles, and the like are actually indicators of their magical abilities or signs of their past witch lives. For example, a birthmark that repeats itself on family members may indicate a line of witches depending on the shape and location. It may represent your ancestral line, a deity that watches over your family, and many other magical things. Patterns, Symbols and Shapes

Where to watch

I feel like what really hooked me into reading the novel was the whole story of the king of hearts. I found that whole section so intriguing that I ended up reading the rest. The book is really fast paced. This is partly because of some answergiving solution in the book (you will understand what I mean when you read it). Some people might say this is a weak point in the plot, I say it is a strong one. It makes sure the story keeps it's speed. it does not have to slow down for stuff that doesn't really contribute to the plot, and I like that a lot. The world comes together piece by piece, a bit like in the Ruby Red-series (which I LOVE! Published in Dutch by this publisher and I highly recommend them!)

Calling him Shadow is one thing, but using the shortened version of his full name is another altogether. It suggests closeness and familiarity between the two that she likely had with very few people in her life, let alone a man who has so assuredly assisted her realm, standing firmly by her side for her entire reign. The additional persecution of anything which resembled feminine religiosity went to interesting lengths in that devotion to Mary became suspect. Today the figure of Mary is both popular and important in the Catholic church, but to the Inquisition, it was a possible sign of overemphasizing the feminine aspect of Christianity. In the Canary Islands, Aldonca de Vargas was reported to the Inquisition for nothing more than smiling at hearing mention of Mary. If you like suspense, witch craft, an epic across the centuries love story and a sibling relationship that will make your heart bleed, than this is the book for you. Some of the condemned in England begged to be burnt rather than be hanged, such as Anne Foster in 1674, but, like Anne, they never got their wish.

A French judge is reported to have regretted being so lenient when he sentenced young kids to be flogged while they watched their parents burn instead of sentencing them to burn as well. Children may not be easily culpable for heresy or their parents' heresy, but they could certainly be influenced by or even possessed by Satan. The only hope of saving their souls was to torture their bodies to drive out the satanic influences.

A lot of stuff is happening in this book. Not to much talking (an other manuscript I've read had A LOT of explaining in talking and it was really boring because of that, hence I noticed in this one). And I really really really liked the ending ;) So that is a good thing to look forward to while reading this! The whole premise to the novel felt like deja-vu, and I'm sure I've read a novel with the same plot, but I still liked it nonetheless. While I wasn't much of a fan of the main character, Leo and Gran were amazing. Loved their personas and presence in the novel.
