When the Widow Jane team set out to produce their own whiskey they wanted to offer something that was flavor-forward, bold, and rich with character, but most importantly had a taste of New York. All Widow Jane whiskeys are proofed with pure limestone water from the legendary Rosendale Mines of NY, just 100 miles north of their home in Red Hook, Brooklyn. It was limestone from this mine that was used to build the foundation of some of New York’s greatest structures: the gargantuan caissons of the Brooklyn Bridge, the Empire State Building, and the 27,000-ton pedestal to the Statue of Liberty. Batch / Bottle / Date — We must note that the bottle sampled for this review was from Batch #308, bottled in 2021. The term ‘small batch bourbon’ is not regulated by the TTB. Some brands may dump hundreds or thousands of barrels for each batch and still use that term on the label. But Widow Jane states it is comprised of 5-barrel batches. That’s an extremely small batch. Because only 5 barrels of bourbon are dumped, each batch will have slightly different characteristics based on the unique flavor profile of each component whiskey in the blend. Tasting Notes

It has a deep copper-colored complexion and gives the most pleasing look. There is something very impressive about the deep, dark, and vibrant color bourbon, blended with different hues and shades. I loved the look of the bottle too. Nose Lovely bourbon and a great blend. Maybe a bit sweeter than I expected but I really liked the character and the blending skills. I will also try to sip other batches as I want to trace the consistency between batches too, which I think is important for signature bottles in the core range. Tasting eight well-made whiskeys and ranking them isn’t easy. The only thing that made this whiskey drop to the last spot was the high rye flavor. If I wanted this much rye in a sipping whiskey, I’d grab a bottle of actual rye whiskey. 7) Bulleit 10 (Taste 1) Bulleit B and B-: Good and above average. The best of the mass market whiskeys fit in this category, as do the bulk of the premium brands. A B- is three stars. If you add some orange bitters to the drink, it gives a great balance to your drink. The sweetness of the alcohol and citrus flavor from the orange makes this drink more delicious and balanced. Who would like the Widow Jane Bourbon taste? First released in 2016 (and rebranded this year), Rebel (formerly called Rebel Yell) is a sourced whiskey. But even though Lux Row doesn’t disclose where this bourbon came from, that doesn’t mean it should be disregarded.On the nose: The first aroma to enter the equation is cherry taffy, which reminds me at once of being at Luna Park in Coney Island during the summer. That’s followed by a butter-and-white-sugar slurry with the airy sweetness of whipped cream, then Golden delicious apples, dilute cola, and a faint floral aspect. There’s also a mineral-like quality that I rather like, and doesn’t remind me of the more polarizing chalky-medicinal note associated with a certain whiskey from the Volunteer state. Overall it’s delicate and inviting. The velvety entry is on the spot because of its well-balanced sweetness that is warm, slightly dry, and covers the mid-palate. 12. Clyde May’s 10-Year Cask Strength Bourbon

This classic bourbon opens with aromas of caramel, dried cherries, vanilla, corn, roasted nuts, and oak. It also has a slight hint of apple and raisins. This whiskey does give off the scent of ethanol at all. As it goes down your nose, the dark stone fruit smells become more pronounced. You may notice cacao powder notes as well. Overall the nose has everything you would want to have in a bourbon flavor whiskey. SmellAs for the rest, there was so little distance between them quality-wise. Another day, another lineup, and any one of these bottles could have ended up on top. But not today. Sourced” shouldn’t be a bad word in the whiskey world and brands like Widow Jane are proving it. Its 10-year-old expression has won numerous awards over the years. The brand’s flagship bourbon, this expression is a marriage of Widow Jane’s rarest and most exciting sourced whiskeys.
