About this deal

The screen is touch sensitive, to a degree, though as there are also plentiful physical controls ranged alongside it that provide much the same functions, we didn’t find ourselves utilising its touch sensitivity that much. We did however enjoy the fact that the EVF (or, as Panasonic prefers, LVF) has an eye sensor alongside it, which deactivates the larger LCD and switches on the EVF as you bring an eye up to it. There is also a dedicated ‘LVF’ (live view finder) button that lets you disable this feature if required, or switch between screens manually.

If we’ve a grumble, however, it’s that this isn’t perhaps a camera for shooting in very low light, especially if handheld, as we discovered on our travels, whereby the effects of camera shake are obvious. The fact that the ISO range tops out at a modest selectable ISO3200 at least means that the worst effects of image noise are avoided – we’d advise shooting up to ISO1600, however and leaving it at that, if you want to avoid a noticeable softening and degradation of the image entirely. Twenty megapixels is quite a lot to cram onto a 1/2.3-inch sensor – it’s probably the most you’d want to – so inevitably something has to give. The Panasonic Lumix TZ95 handled chromatic aberrations well during the review, with just a little purple fringing present around the TFT Screen LCD Display (1040k dots), Tiltable monitor/Static Touch Control/Field of View: Approx. 100%, Wide Viewing-angle, AF Coating Approx. 322 g with Battery and SD Memory Card (0.71 lb)/Approx. 280 g without Battery and SD Memory Card (0.62 lb)

Panasonic’s perennial travel zoom – or ‘TZ’ – series of compact cameras has received an upgrade in the shape of the Lumix TZ95, which comes with a Leica branded 30x optical zoom lens, 20.3 MP resolution sensor and 4K video shooting capability. Of interest to long time followers of this range is the addition of a tilt-able 3-inch, 1040K-dot rear monitor, as well as brand new high resolution LVF (Live View Finder), that here is a teeny 0.21-inches in size, meaning you have to squint to view it. The PowerShot SX730 HS’s lens shares the same f3.3 maximum aperture at the wide angle setting, closing to f6.9 when full zoomed in. When the SX730 HS is zoomed to the 720mm maximum of the Lumix TZ90 / ZS70, its maximum aperture is f6.3 – more or less the same. The closest focusing distances with the lenses set to wide are 3cm for the TZ90 / ZS70, and 1cm for the SX730 HS, allowing both to capture good macro images, although giving the Canon the edge. Max. 4x (When Digital Zoom is used simultaneously with Intelligent Zoom, you can only increase the zoom ratio up to 2x.) Approx. 328 g with Battery and SD Memory Card (0.72 lb)/Approx. 286 g without Battery and SD Memory Card (0.63 lb)

The Panasonic Lumix DC-TZ90 handled chromatic aberrations well during the review, with just a little purple fringing present around the edges of objects in certain high-contrast situations, as shown in the examples below. As with its TZ90 predecessor, with the TZ95 its manufacturer again puts the camera’s autofocus response time down as a swift 0.1 seconds. In practice, that means if we can visualize a potential image before squeezing its shutter release button then the TZ95 is liable to be able to capture it. The zoom lens is similarly swift to respond, traveling the extent of its focal range from maximum wide angle to extreme telephoto setting in 3-4 seconds. The lens’ gliding operation is accompanied by a commendably low mechanical buzz. Use a card with SD Speed Class with ""UHS-I Speed Class 3 (U3)"" when recording motion pictures with [MP4] in [4K] or [4K PHOTO]. As before, Panasonic’s 4k Photo modes provide a fun way of exploiting the fact 4k video captures an 8 Megapixel image up to 30 times a second. Panasonic equips its 4k Photo cameras with menus that let you easily capture bursts of video before scrolling through the footage and extracting the perfect frame as a JPEG image, all in-camera. You could of course frame grab from video externally, but Panasonic has made it easy to perform the whole process in-camera.The extracted stills don’t stand up to super-close scrutiny, but for sharing online or printing at small sizes, they’re more than adequate. Why buy the Panasonic Lumix TZ95? If you want to capture video at the full sensor width, you’ll need to reduce the quality to 1080, although there’s obviously a vertical crop due to the different aspect ratios – 16:9 against 4:3. Here’s how the TZ80 / ZS60 crop looks for 4k video, below left, compared to 1080p video, below right. FHD/50p: Approx. 100 min (rear monitor), 90 min (LVF)/FHD/50i: Approx. 100 min (rear monitor), 100 min (LVF) The Panasonic Lumix DC-TZ90 offers a Macro setting that allows you to focus on a subject that is 3cms away from the camera when the lens is set to wide-angle.

The LUMIX TZ95 is equipped with several advanced features, all intended to help you get the best shot. As well as the new vlogger tools, older models to compare and contrast with the TZ95 include the Canon PowerShot SX740 HS. This boasts a similar form factor yet has a broader focal range courtesy of a whopping 40x optical zoom. Just like the Panasonic it offers a 20.3 megapixel 1/2.3-inch sensor, and under ideal daylight conditions provides color-rich, punchy images requiring little if any image adjustment afterward. However, if you’re operating the camera in a darkened environment, like a concert hall or theatre, the proximity of the main power and video buttons means that it is easy to mistake one for the other and turn the camera off when you actually meant to start recording. Again, familiarity with the camera over time helps such mistakes to be avoided. Commendably this Panasonic is swift to power up in any event, being ready for action in around two seconds, its lens extending from its position flush to the body to arrive at its extreme wide-angle 24mm equivalent setting. Axis HYBRID O.I.S. +*/* 5-Axis compensation works in video recording except for 4K video or high-speed video recording.
