I hope you found these 18 best books on storytelling helpful, so that you can captivate your audience (of one or many) and excel in whatever you do. In The Art of Storytelling: Easy Steps to Presenting an Unforgettable Story, John Walsh takes the reader through the steps of becoming a good story teller. Written with a Christian audience in mind, the book reads like a textbook because it walks you step-by-step through the process of story telling. Does that take anything away from the book? No. The author made a damn good presentation of the art of storytelling, with a lot of guidance and case studies. His writing was eminently readable and understandable. I have only one gripe: I kept getting the impression the author promised to unload stories from the Bible as examples of master storytelling. I was disappointed.

There are plenty of examples from books, movies and TV shows to illustrate the points being made and the fact that Storr primarily looks at the neurological and psychological facets of storycraft makes this a wholly unique read. I feel anyone who writes or is planning to write a novel of any genre would find this helpful. Because of this book, I will never think about a novel in the same way again. Letters from a Self-Made Merchant to His Son, by George Horace Lorimer, is an important book for storytellers to read because it serves as a source of inspiration. If you want your readers to leave inspired, you need a good example to follow. The letters in this book inspire people to go into business, and you may be able to apply the lessons to your stories. Of course, the book also comes with a few life lessons you might be able to apply to other areas of your life. We are born only with two fears, all the rest we learn. One of those fears we learn and petrifies most people is the fear to feel embarrassed.Trevor voiced a literal willingness to die for his place in this hierarchy, rather than participate in a system that might put him on the same plane as immigrants or racial minorities. I wish Walsh would have elaborated more on what he meant by sermons as stories instead of lectures. Much of the Bible is narrative, but what about the epistles? The psalms? The proverbs? Parts of the prophets? It's not impossible to do, but a few examples would have greatly helped. Also, how does a pastor teach sanctification and justification in the form of a story?

I used Star Warsand The Godfatheras examples because they’re fantastic stories that anyone can relate to. One thing that really slowed me down was Storr’s use of pronouns. He mixes singular and plural like they were masculine and feminine. Michael Corleone is they/them, for example. At one point, he uses the word themself, a combination of singular and plural in a single word, which grabbed my attention and made me forget what I was reading. I actually stopped and posted it on a forum to see if anyone else had ever encountered it. Why bother to squeeze a tortured neuter pronoun in for someone the reader clearly knows is female? Sometimes it’s hard to know who he is referring to. His and their are not interchangeable.The book is divided into three sections. Section One is about how to create a captivating story. Section two is about how to present the story well (this section is not essential, but recommended for anyone who wants to improve their storytelling skills). Section three is about why storytelling is essential. The focus isn't so much on how to come up with a good story, it's about teaching you how to tell a story effectively. How can startling them of the surprise get them to pay closer attention? How can you word your sentences in a way that you convince them to see things your way? Then, you can convince people to take action. That is how you can write a beautiful story. Understanding the role storytelling has played throughout history is vital; it will challenge you to tell stories that matter.
