About this deal

Best of all are the descriptions of the people who accompany Macfarlane, or whom he meets along the way(s), as though he effortlessly, lovingly distills the essence of each person into a few sentences. There's the artist Steve Dilworth, who reminds Macfarlane that "a shaman who took himself seriously would be insufferable" (171). Of David Quentin, with whom he traversed the Broomway, he writes:

Ne bi bilo fer prećutati: Makfarlan stvarno mnogo zna i mnogo toga je video, susretao je istinski zanimljive i neobične ljude, sve je lepo sročeno i kako treba poređano, sigurna sam da će drugi čitaoci naći štošta interesantno i nadahnjujuće. Pa ipak je Makfarlanovo pisanje književni ekvivalent glumi Leonarda Dikaprija: previše se upinje. Her brow furrowed. "The Israelis have stolen this land from us, they are thieves. I once wrote a letter to Ronald Reagan, I knew it would go in the waste-paper basket, but I needed to get it off my chest. 'Dear President Reagan,' it began...

His work has been involved with the music of contemporary musicians including Johnny Flynn, [31] Frank Turner, The Memory Band, Grasscut, Julie Fowlis and Karine Polwart. He co-wrote the song Coins for Eyes with Flynn for the 9th series of the BBC programme Digging for Britain. [32] Awards and honours [ edit ] His father John Macfarlane is a respiratory physician who co-authored the CURB-65 score of pneumonia in 2003. His brother James is also a consultant physician in respiratory medicine. He is married to Julia Lovell, and has three children. [ citation needed] Books [ edit ] Cautioned by Anne Campbell that walking barefoot is an important way to more keenly sense the landscape one is partaking in, Macfarlane does this for a time, finding it a rewarding experience. He comments that "sometimes the mortification of the sole leads to an amelioration of the soul." Thomas, says Macfarlane, experienced “the tension between roaming and homing”. He writes: “Thomas used the old ways to keep himself in motion, for like George Borrow – whose biography he wrote and with whom he closely identified – he was depressive”. Robert Macfarlane erhält Sachbuchpreis von NDR Kultur". Focus. 11 November 2019 . Retrieved 11 December 2019.

Mountains of the Mind: A History of a Fascination. London and New York: Granta Books and Pantheon Books. 2003. ISBN 0375421807. Soren Kierkegaard spoke of every day being able to walk himself "into a state of well-being, away from every illness & into his best thoughts." Robert Macfarlane's The Old Ways: A Journey on Foot is a book that endorses the therapeutic value of walking but in particular, following the old & sometimes ancient pathways within the U.K., especially the Hebrides and to points well beyond, including Spain, Palestine & Tibet. Dalrymple, William (10 June 2012). "The Old Ways: A Journey on Foot by Robert Macfarlane – review". The Guardian. London. This is pure magic. The old ways are foot-paths and sea-lanes, mostly around Britain, but in Spain, Palestine and China too for good measure. Macfarlane has a wonderful descriptive style; his similes and metaphors are breathtaking yet never go over the top into the purple prose of Creative Writing. Reading them (and I read a few selections aloud to R for the sheer pleasure of hearing the word-plays and allusions) is almost like reading poetry. Within each chapter, there are digressions into the history behind the ways, and historical figures who were associated with them. So this is not just a travel book about walking (and sailing) but a very literary one too.
