About this deal

For many years, he never thought of himself as creative as he was never artistic. However, once he started writing the words just came and flowed.

DS Max Craigie’s team, the innocuous sounding Policing Standards Reassurance team whose task is actually to root out police corruption, smell a rat and Max, DC Janie Calder DI Ross Fraser and their analyst, Norma, swing into action. Snuggie Gibson, one of the more ethical journalists says a source tells him that the killer is actually in the police force. That answers a lot of questions. It reeks of vigilante justice. A suspect is identified and a sting operation planned but when they break down the door of this suspect they are too late. He is dead in the bathtub - another apparent suicide. But Max is having none of it. Somehow they will prove it was murder and they WILL catch the perpetrator! Over many months, much window staring, and many coffees, he finally had his draft of more than 100,000 words.A brilliant addition to the series and Neil is now an auto-buy author for me. Roll on the next one...' NetGalley reviewer, Once again Neil Lancaster has written an absolute blinder. It starts off at a furious pace and doesn't let up. The investigation is compelling, the action exciting and is heart racingly furious in places. The gallows humour present in the previous books is woven in seamlessly throughout and I loved it. The reasons for the killings and the identity of the perp aren't at all simple to unravel with twists, turns, and discoveries throughout but as the end hurtled towards Max so did the danger and I found myself anxious to finish but not wanting it to end. DISCLOSURE: Thank you to HQ, HQ Digital via Netgalley for providing a digital ARC of The Night Watch by Neil Lancaster for review. All opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own personal opinions. It was only when he got out of policing and moved to the Scottish countryside that the desire to write became even stronger. Max, Janie and Ross return in the latest gripping novel in this explosive Scottish crime series. Fans of Ian Rankin, Stuart MacBride and Marion Todd will love The Night Watch !

In the course of his career, he prosecuted many corrupt and wealthy members of the legal profession most of whom had been deep in organized immigration criminal offenses. A lawyer is found dead at sunrise on a lonely clifftop at Dunnet Head on the northernmost tip of Scotland. It was supposed to be his honeymoon, but now his wife will never see him again. These prosecutions resulted in disbarments, asset confiscations that ran into the millions, and jail sentences. As it happens, the man had been an employee of the National Crime Agency where he had been working as an intelligence officer. Looking to find more information, Max and Janie go to Beattie’s home to consult. When they arrive at their colleague’s home they find him hanging but are certain that he did not hang himself. The best police procedural I've read in years - fast-paced, compelling and deeply authentic. DS Max Craigie is a brilliant hero and I can't wait for the next in the series' Jane Casey DS Max Craigie and his team, Policing Standards Reassurance Team, sniff and stamp out police corruption. DI Ross Fraser, DC Janie Calder, and their analyst, Norma, act on the information gained from Shuggie Gibson – a Journalist with grit, determination, and an ethos for doing the right thing. He informs Craigie and his team that the killer is a Police Officer. He doesn’t need to question this information too far – a taser, the nature of the victims, and the killing itself scream a vigilante on a mission.

Neil Lancaster is a mystery fiction author from the United Kingdom who is best known for the “DS Max Craigie” and the “Tom Novak” series of novels. He used to read it over and over again when he was twelve years old until the book ultimately fell apart. The case is linked to several mysterious deaths, including the murder of the lawyer's last client - Scotland's most notorious criminal... who had just walked free. DS Max Craigie knows this can only mean one thing: they have a vigilante serial killer on their hands.Well, this is a belter of a book! A hugely entertaining and gripping read!’ NetGalley reviewer, ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

The author was born in Liverpool in the 1960s and spent much of his childhood and early adulthood living in the UK. We’ve never met Mrs F in person, but she’s as prominent as any of the other characters and equally unique. They unearth large-scale corruption involving the Scottish Police Service. Max and Janie may have to turn against the very people they have been calling colleagues for months. Like many authors, Neil Lancaster grew up with a desire to one day become a fiction author. He believed that one day he would become an author but he was always too busy with family and work that he never had the time. The case is linked to several mysterious deaths, including the murder of the lawyer’s last client – Scotland’s most notorious criminal… who had just walked free. DS Max Craigie knows this can only mean one thing: they have a vigilante serial killer on their hands.
