Left Hanging: The case of the 11-year-old-girl committing suicide is never resolved, and Renee never makes a definite determination as to whether it was suicide or murder. I really enjoyed this book. I liked the complex characters and the equally complex storyline. Bosch is now retired – again – and is handed a murder book by the wife of a recently deceased ex-colleague who was a mentor to him in his early days as a junior homicide detective with the LAPD. The unsolved case detailed in the file relates to the murder of a young man, some twenty years ago. Why had this file been taken home by his old friend when he retired from the force? It’s not clear, but Bosch intends to spend some time taking a look at the case, if for no other reason than to sate his curiosity. At the same time, he has some personal issues on his mind: a man breaking into rooms in his daughters building near her university and some health issues of his own that have recently come to light. On the Night of the Fire, released in the United States as The Fugitive, is a 1939 British thriller film, directed by Brian Desmond Hurst and starring Ralph Richardson and Diana Wynyard. The film is based on the novel of the same name by F. L. Green. It was shot on location in Newcastle upon Tyne and was released shortly after the outbreak of World War II. Ann Lindell is a complex character who is drawn in several directions by her past and by her future. Ann’s former police partner and the neighbours in the village are equally complex. Eriksson does an excellent job of slowly revealing their secrets and eccentricities as the story unfolds. He does not stop with just the characters. Eriksson helps you understand how difficult it can be living in a small village particularly when that village is falling on hard times. A new Harry Bosch book is like coming home. It is always exciting to see what he is going to get involved in this time and which path his life is going to take. He is now a retired detective but seems to be busier than ever. In this book he has multiple cases going on as well as his own health issues and keeping an eye on his daughter Maddie who is about to graduate. Sequel Hook: The third Harry Bosch novel in a row to have one. At the very end Renee and Harry agree to investigate a case in Thompson's file, one Thompson and Bosch investigated: the unsolved murder of a female college student in 1982. I’ve read everything Connelly has written but I still think this book could easily be read as a standalone.
Tropes:
I may have been a bit lost since it was the first one I read in the series, but I did like most of the characters, and the writing is well done. I’m still a long-time Harry Bosch fan and I see no reason to change my willingness to buy and read anything that Michael Connelly writes. There is something about Nordic based mysteries that just draw me in. There always seems to be an underlying darkness. The ones I’ve read always have flawed police detectives whose lives seem lonely and a bit sad and this book is no exception with one difference, one of our detectives is retired.
