Horn Book (August 1976): 438-442. This article critiques The Machine Gunners, comparing it to other books about the war written for young adults and praising its insights and themes. The war confuses and corrupts the values of these young people, leading them to lie and steal in the belief that their survival depends on these activities. Out of desperation, they decide to take control of their own lives. The Machine Gunners is a children's historical novel by Robert Westall, published by Macmillan in 1975. Set in northeastern England shortly after the Battle of Britain (February 1941), it features children who find a crashed German aircraft with a machine gun and ammunition; they build a fortress and capture and imprison a German gunner. The author also wrote a play based on the book, and others have adapted it for television and radio. A sequel, Fathom Five, set two years later, was published in 1979. The Machine Gunners is Robert Westall’s first novel about World War II. It is set in the town of Garmouth, a seaside town in northern England. Though fictional, it is modeled on Tynemouth, the town where Westall grew up during the war.In his attempt to realistically portray the lives of schoolchildren during World War II, Westall includes some harsh language, sexual innuendos, violent behavior, and religious allusions. Because the occasional use of unpleasant language by the young characters is usually in response to stressful or frustrating situations, these realistic lapses should be of little concern to most parents and teachers. So naturally I went from remembering it to owning it within the hour. And then it was but a short year or so before I rose to the top of my ever-growing To Read list. They start to build the base, and are nearly killed when German planes come out of nowhere and start bombing the area. The school is bombed, and since all other schools are full, school is called off.
