Debbie Ford (October 1, 1955– February 17, 2013) was an American self-help author, coach, lecturer and teacher, most known for The New York Times best-selling book, The Dark Side of the Light Chasers (1998), which aimed to help readers overcome their shadow side with the help of modern psychology and spiritual practices. In following years, she went on to write eight more books including Spiritual Divorce, Why Good People Do Bad Things, and The 21-Day Consciousness Cleanse, which have sold over 1 million copies and been translated into 32 languages. One of my 'Queens of Business' had been so focused on chasing out the 'dark' that she had forgotten to search out and embrace the light side of her personality. Building on a concept that originated with psychologist Carl Jung, Ford argues that owning all parts of your personality, both the 'good' and 'bad' (the parts that you don't want people to see) is what allows you to "reclaim your power, creativity, brilliance and dreams" and be the authentic person you're meant to be. Right now, within each of us there are two voices fighting to be heard: the voice of reason, good conscience, and the good of the greater whole; and the voice of fear, shame, and selfishness. The voice of our higher self versus the voice of our lower self. This is the dilemma, the inner struggle between the dark and the light aspects of our humanity. One voice is relaxed, trusting, and stable, while the other is fearful, nervous, and calculating. One holds the promise of serenity, peace of mind, and an innate knowledge that things are as they should be, while the other echoes the fragmented uncertainty of the unknown. One tells us to do the right thing, not to worry if our neighbors have more than us, and the other tells us to work harder, to find a way to get, collect, and win the prize for having the most toys. So when certain impulses arise, we deny them instead of confronting them, giving them a healthy voice, then letting them go.
