and I recommend "Introducing" series by "David Robinson", as is exhibited with graphics, and focuses about contemporary philosophy, which Sophie's World do not consider at all. In an alternative way, you could watch "crush course: philosophy" series to learn about some terms of philosophy. and i do not recommend it so far; because it is so simplified that it hardly talking about serious philosophy. In 1998, it was adapted into a PC and Mac CD-ROM game by The MultiMedia Corporation. [ citation needed] The game allows players to learn about philosophy as in the book, while adapting the metafiction elements for a virtual world.

It] is a splendidly written, thrilling book, a philosophical novel on the most important subject of the 20th century. If it is not, for me, a hands-down literary masterpiece, the reason is that, in transferring the form of the Southern Gothic to this vastly larger subject, Styron has been unable to get rid of or even noticeably tone down those qualities—some superficial, some deep—in the Southern Gothic that have always made Yankees squirm. [12] Controversies [ edit ] At publication [ edit ] proposing that this more general view of the barbarism of Auschwitz (and in particular the fact that Slavic Christians were caught up in its program of forced labour and extermination) obviates the need for Christian guilt and sets aside historical arguments for Christian anti-Semitism as a causative agent in the Holocaust, andI slogged through the first few chapters. Did my best to suspend my disbelief at the transparently device the author uses to introduce the ideas of many famous (and not-so-famous) philosophers. I tried to ignore the sophomoric dialog and trite inner-monologue of the child. I even put the book in the bathroom so I could force myself to keep reading it. I filled in with other books... maybe it was just too much philosophy at once! If I took it in smaller doses, perhaps I'd enjoy this survey of the subject. a b c d e f g h i j Mathé, Sylvie (2004). Sophie meets a boy called Matteo . Matteo is also an orphan and lives on the rooftops to avoid being found. He agrees to help Sophie in her search. Totalitarian terror achieved its most terrible triumph when it succeeded in cutting the moral person off from the individualist escape and in making the decisions of conscience absolutely questionable and equivocal. (...) Who could solve the moral dilemma of the Greek mother, who was allowed by the Nazis to choose which of her three children should be killed? [7] I enjoyed the book immensely. I studied basic philosophy in college so I soon became aware that many philosophers were left out and whole era's were glossed over in this book. You know, that's OK. Remember I said “It’s not very good?” I was talking about the novel/fiction/entertainment half of the book. Here’s the plot in a nutshell: Sophie begins getting letters from a stranger. These letters form the text of a correspondence course in philosophy. Sophie learns and grows and begins to think about her world differently. Sophie, without the knowledge of her mother, becomes the student of an old philosopher, Alberto Knox. Alberto teaches her about the history of philosophy. She gets a substantive and understandable review from the Pre-Socratics to Jean-Paul Sartre. In his review of the novel in the New York Times, John Gardner takes it as an example of Southern Gothic, [ dubious – discuss] writing that:Robin, Corey (2015). [ bettersourceneeded] Reading the first two chapters will show to you if you born as a philosopher or not, and if you would finish it or not!. Sophie's Choice generated significant controversy at time of its publication. Sylvie Mathé notes that Sophie's Choice, which she refers to as a "highly controversial novel", appeared in press in the year following the broadcast of the NBC miniseries Holocaust (1978), engendering a period in American culture where "a newly-raised consciousness of the Holocaust was becoming a forefront public issue." [2] Mathé says: Hell Reconsidered," In This Quiet Dust and Other Writings, 1993 [1982], pp.105–115, New York, NY: Vintage. Krzyzanowski, Jerzy R. (1983) "What's Wrong with Sophie's Choice?," Polish American Studies, No. 1 (Spring), p.72, see [2], accessed 7 November 2015.

You may want to read more about historical schools of philosophy; because reading it for one time is not enough, so would love to read another book about it. You remember that we became a book," continued Alberto patiently. "I can see that this book was very successful. It has been widely read - so widely, in fact, that people have started parodying it. We are in one of those parodies." Twice a Year was a 1946 book edition that contained the text of Camus' The Crisis of Man (French, La Crise de l'homme), a work that gives the examples of four moral contradictions (including the Greek mother's exposure [ clarification needed]). As a history, the book fares much better. As an introduction to philosophy, or even a refresher survey, it excels. Gaarder, through the character of Alberto Knox, is a superb teacher.White, Terry (1994) "Allegorical Evil, Existentialist Choice in O'Connor, Oates, and Styron," The Midwest Quarterly, Vol. 35, No. 3 (Spring), pp.383–397. Sylvie Mathé notes that Styron's "position" in the writing of this novel was made clear in his contemporary interviews and essays, in the latter case, in particular "Auschwitz", "Hell Reconsidered", and "A Wheel of Evil Come Full Circle", [2] and quotes Alvin Rosenfeld's summary of Styron's position, where Rosenfeld states that: [3] There is not a worthwhile introductory Philosophy text for young readers. Bertrand Russell’s History of Western Philosophy might be a bit much for some people. While the “for young people” part of this premise is spelled out in the text, it’s clear that anybody, regardless of age, needs an accessible survey of the history of philosophy if one is to understand one’s world. By 2011, the novel had been translated into fifty-nine languages, with over fortymillion print copies sold. [3] It is one of the most commercially successful Norwegian novels outside of Norway, and has been adapted into a film and a PC game. Sophie's World is a 1991 novel by Norwegian writer Jostein Gaarder. It follows the events of Sophie Amundsen, a teenage girl living in Norway, and Alberto Knox, a middle-aged philosopher who introduces her to philosophical thinking and the history of philosophy.
