By default, every new Unity scene contains a Directional Light. This is linked to the procedural sky system defined in the Environment Lighting section of the Lighting Panel (Lighting>Scene>Skybox). You can change this behaviour by deleting the default Directional Light and creating a new light or simply by specifying a different GameObject from the ‘Sun’ parameter (Lighting>Scene>Sun). If you want to make one of these designs, the app provides a template to follow. Hang the paper grid on the wall and the template shows you exactly where to mount each clip. This is a great feature, as it lets you create a clear, well-defined design without any trial and error.

Of course, I didn’t choose to go that route while setting up the lights in my home. I wanted to create my own design, so I sketched it on the wall using a pencil and then started attaching clips along the outline.
Shapelights bring atmosphere to any indoor or outdoor space. They can be set to gently cycle through red, green, blue, purple, pink and light blue or you can set them to stay on your favourite colour. Shapelights also offer a brighter white and warm white setting which are noticeably brighter than the colours. These images have a direct relationship with the experiments that produce them. Photographers created optical effects in the studio and the darkroom before capturing the results on photographic paper. They manipulated light through movement, moving materials and equipment, both by hand and using mechanical means, such as turntables. By passing light through objects and filters they could change its direction and intensity. Since the advent of the laser, structuring laser light in amplitude and phase has been achieved outside the laser cavity (with refractive, adaptive, and diffractive elements) and inside the laser cavity (through a variety of amplitude or phase objects that force the laser internally to oscillate on particular transverse modes). We will not discuss in detail the contribution of these tools for controlling light, but the reader is referred to the references provided for further details. Instead, we will consider a modern derivative of the above, namely shaping light with computer-generated holograms (digital holograms) using spatial light modulators (SLMs). Here, we will show how to “get started” with SLMs for the creation and detection of structured light fields.
