About this deal

Riding range, comfort and hill-climbing are the most important aspects to consider when choosing your e-scooter and, from a range point of view, the RS2 comes out well. After five miles of riding in the fastest (Sport) mode, I still had three bars of battery life left out of five, and you can swap the battery out for another should you need it. The 6.4Ah battery can last up to ranges of 15 miles (25km) and has three ride modes, eco, standard and sport. I've found that's enough for short commutes and other short local trips, although the battery level indicator seems very unreliable – it would vary wildly during a trip – sometimes going up and sometimes going down. Tyres on the Hummingbird are 8.5 inches in diameter and they are solid rubber. While this means there is zero chance of punctures (there isn’t any air to escape!), it does mean that the ride is harsher than air-filled equivalents. We found that on smooth tarmac, the ride was fine, but as soon as we ventured over gravel and rougher woodland routes, it became a bit more jarring. Not a major issue for the occasional foray off-piste, but probably not the best scooter if that’s going to be your main pursuit. A range of >15 miles is not uncommon which can cover a decent loop in an hour or two with a pint en route! But remember people – it’s best not to get drunk as a skunk and then scoot!

Out of the box, not much needs doing to the Riley RS1; you will need a small hex key (supplied) to tighten the brake and you'll need to screw on the handlebars. It's a simple process and takes just a few minutes. The in-built triple braking system let’s you ride fast and in-control with three brakes; a hydraulic disc brake, E-ABS brake & pedal brake. The handlebars are fairly standard, but include the brake lever for the left hand and a natty blue twist throttle to make the scooter zip off. The brake cable is coloured in the same blue and looks nicely coordinated. The throttle also includes a power on/off button and a switch to choose between different levels of maximum acceleration – beginner, standard and pro. This is useful when you first start as everybody tends to be a bit wary. However, soon you’re always switching to pro… Lighting There is also a smartphone app for the Kirin which is also well designed and actually useful! It allows you to remotely deactivate the motor of the scooter, set cruise control (meaning you don’t need constant thumb pressure on the throttle), search for Google Map destinations and look at the usual ride stats. As apps go, it was one of the best – and not the cheapest scooter in the range! I found the Riley RS1 to be a comfortable and easy-to-ride electric scooter. There were no nasty surprises whilst out riding, and I could happily complete daily journeys if this was my scooter – and if electric scooters were legal in the UK. Grrr.

ELECTRIC SCOOTERS FOR KIDS

The Hummingbird Electric Scooter which is sold in the UK by London-based FlyRide is another great value product. Although it’s manufactured in China by a company called Eco-Flying, this shouldn’t put you off – FlyRide offer a 12 month warranty on all their gear, and the Hummingbird is CE certified.

The RS2 has three riding modes – Beginner, Normal and Sport – and you can switch between these by pressing the function button on the throttle. The Beginner mode’s maximum speed is set at just over 6mph, Normal at 9mph andSport is 15.5mph. It’s very easy to get tied up in motor this, wattage that, an often overlooked element of performance is the tyres. The Riley RS1 has 10” pneumatic tyres that provide plenty of grip and help smooth out imperfections of the road surface. I’m not a fan of honeycomb or solid tyres, and at Electroheads we think that the bigger wheels are significantly safer and better all-round. Weighing 15kg, the Riley RS2 isn’t the heaviest e-scooter on the market, nor is it the lightest. It has a weather rating of IP54, which means it can be used in puddles and light rain, and it’s also built to carry a maximum load of 100kg. If your budget is limited but you still want a cool little scooter to zip around on then we urge you to take a look at the Kugoo Kirin S1 Electric Scooter. We were pretty blown away with the specifications of this little dude, and found that it did everything really well. The only real aspect that let’s the side down is the looks of it and the finish of some of the materials. Not the end of the world if you can overlook these shortcomings. If one of my friends was looking for their first electric scooter, I’d point them in the direction of the RS1, time and time again. Reliable, practical, and simply a smile-inducing riding experience, this is a scooter I could confidently ride every day. In terms of performance, the RS1 has plenty of zip from its 350W motor. Under peak acceleration, the motor can supply 700W which can get you up to a limited max speed of 15.5mph.
