This is because of its high-quality mechanical design. An intuitive Variable-D architecture reduces the proximity effect, ensuring that your sound remains accurate and well-rounded at different distances from the mic. a b c d Staff (2005). In purchasing this microphone I compared scores and scores of mics (in studios and also by using an online comparison clipilator) and out of all the dynamics I have encountered thus far, it is easily my favourite and would require something pretty special to top it. The RE20 was seen on television for the ten-year run of the fictional sit-com Frasier, starting in 1993. Title character Frasier Crane ( Kelsey Grammer) appeared to speak into the microphone to deliver psychiatry advice on talk radio. [1] Other users of the RE20 family of microphones include film director Robert Altman. When he was depicting the making of A Prairie Home Companion radio show, Altman's 2006 fictionalized film featured eight RE27N/D microphones used by the singers and announcers, serving as their actual microphones, not just dummy props. The Electro-Voice RE20 is an American professional cardioid dynamic microphone, commonly used in broadcasting applications since 1968. Designed by Electro-Voice using the company's patented Variable-D technology and a large-diaphragm element, it has been described as an industry standard "iconic" microphone for its natural sound and its wide usage in radio, television and recording studios. [1] In 2015, the RE20 was inducted into the TEC Awards Technology Hall of Fame. [2]

Actually, it offers one of the most nuanced vocal recordings I’ve heard on any mic, whilst retaining all the traditional benefits of a dynamic model. Recording with the RE20 is practically cheating. The combination of a Acoustalloy diaphragm and low-mass aluminium voice coil ensures the finest results straight out of the box. One advantage that the RE20 has over a large diaphragm condenser is its ability to react to instruments or vocalists with high SPLs. Results will be record-ready, no matter how loud the musician performs as it's hard to overload and distort this microphone. It is also capable of consistent performance in environments which offer high levels of humidity and temperatures. The RE20 boldly goes where no condenser dares! The most important thing, as ever, is your content. That’s ultimately what’s going to determine the quality and impact of your podcast. Bermingham, Jason (July 2011). "Producing Professional Voiceovers At Home: Part 2". Sound on Sound.

Honestly,...it is such a forgiving mic too in that it keeps outside disturbances at bay with seemingly apparent ease. I have no idea how anyone can have noise issues with this thing. My studio is far from sound proofed and yes,..I take some of the basic precautions with moving blankets here and there and a carpeted floor with a popcorn ceiling above, but its just basic stuff. The mic is even next to my giant desktop PC workstation. It honestly doesn't care and just seems to be focused on my deep voice when I speak. One thing I think is important to mention is that this mic (like many quality dynamics), is very low output, so for the sound to be fully realised it needs to be driven hard with gain. For this reason I thoroughly recommend purchasing either a Cloudlifter or Triton Fethead alongside this mic. These products provide a clean gain boost by utilising the phantom power in your preamps (it does not feed the signal to your mic so there is no danger to your mic). Since I have done this it has made the sound of the mic even bigger and even when played at the same volume, the difference in fullness (and the re20 is already full to begin with) between with or without a gain boost is quite significant. If an item can not be repaired, a similar alternative product or cash discount (as defined in this policy) will be offered Here’s a sound sample of the Electro-Voice RE20 with no cleaning or post-processing applied. You’ll hear it working through the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and the Yamaha MG10. The podcast episode sample was from PodCraft.Collection and delivery costs are included for the first 2 years in the event of an item becoming faulty Rated 5/5 Kept trying others...THEN I FINALLY MATURED and grew up! Realized I already had the best microphone for my voice AND for EVERY USE! THE EV RE20! But here’s the bottom line. Most podcasters don’t need an amazing microphone, they just need a good one – and there’s plenty of those on the market.
