About this deal

The author’s childhood home was a matriarchy that presented her many opportunities to interact with much older women, not to mention listening in on their stories as they raised up, supported and tore one another down for various reasons. I’ve always dreamed of being a writer and when my first novel – Playing Away – was published the Evening Standard identified me as one of London’s ‘Twenty Faces to Watch’, which was very nice of them!

She decides to embark on an adulterous affair with a horridly smarmy and slimy guy from work and proceeds to throw caution to the wind. I felt completely awful for her poor, unknowing husband throughout.I wanted to become a writer when I was a little girl. I used to visit our local library with my mother and sister on the way home from school. We were allowed to choose three books each and I would read them in a day and return them the following afternoon. A librarian said to me, “Goodness, you read so much, would you like to be an author one day?” – that planted the seed. When I was a bit older, I went on to discover authors like Jane Austen and made my way through the romantic classics. Emma was one of my favourites, as Austen’s heroin is such a complex, flawed character – she has a devoted father, she’s going to inherit, she’s very beautiful, but she’s also very meddlesome. I loved the idea of a flawed heroin and thought there was some fun in that. One book that really made me want to write my own fiction was Rachel’s Holiday by Marian Keyes. Marian’s voice is so unapologetically her own and her voice shines through. It made me realise that people are interested in stories about normal people and relatively ordinary people have stories to tell – that’s what I did when I wrote Playing Away. I was able to write in a voice that wasn’t particularly scholarly and it was an everyday story about a contemporary affair. When and where do you read?

Spectacularly unsuitable and overwhelmingly sexy, he’s about to destroy her peace of mind and her happily ever after, yet she just can’t seem to resist. I really did not like any of the characters. I hated John, I hated Lucy, I hated Peter, I hated Connie, and I had huge moments of dislike for Rose. Alison doesn’t want to believe him but the evidence begins to corroborate his story. If that wasn’t bad enough, the man tells Allison that his wife died of cancer and that Katherine might have inherited it. John was Craig's best friend, whereas Craig was a plain guy. John was known as a playboy, but he was good for Craig. He helped Craig until Craig got his one-and-only worship woman.

What To Read Next

Luke and Connie’s close friends look up to their relationship and hope to find their own soul mates. When Connie starts an affair with John and tells her closest friend she is horrified that she would risk such a loving relationship, but Connie is completely hooked by John’s sex appeal. I hope they live happily ever after. Adele Parks tries to bring that same drama and complexity to her books. She isn’t too keen on producing contemporary romance novels filled with desperate women engaging in catty exchanges.
