About this deal

The play takes awhile to build suspense, like a slow-climbing roller-coaster, but once at the top it swoops with abandon. The silliness turns sharply into sadism and the fear is palpable. Even Plimpton seems terrified. Through a maze of manipulations and memories, dark secrets are revealed. Each character's persona changes before our eyes and motives and madness itself are spun inside-out. Discussions of treatments for the criminally insane that involve psychodrama put us on notice. Exactly what are we watching, and why does there seem to be no escape? Horowitz wrote many stand-alone novels in the 1990s. His 1994 novel Granny, a comedy thriller about an evil grandmother, was Horowitz's first book in three years, and it was the first of three books for an audience similar to that of Groosham Grange. The second of these was The Switch, a body swap story, first published in 1996. The third was 1997's The Devil and His Boy, which is set in the Elizabethan era and explores the rumour of Elizabeth I's secret son. Cullen, Helen (5 July 2020). "Author Anthony Horowitz and his wife, Jill Green, on their rollercoaster courtship". The Sunday Times . Retrieved 23 October 2023. Anthony Horowitz is in trouble. His West End debut has been panned and the scathing reviewer stabbed to death in their own hallway. That would be bad enough, but he's the one who's been arrested; two 'old friends' on the force are holding quite the grudge against him and have no intention of listening to his pleas of innocence. Good job he knows a very good detective... Except the last conversation they had consisted of Horowitz refusing to write any more books together. Now he needs Hawthorne's help - desperately - and he might not get it. All in all, this well known author is having a really bad day...

Everything appears relatively normal until the doctor finally arrives. Dr. Farquhar (played by Michael Sherwin), the hospital director, initially cannot recall agreeing to the meeting and is reluctant to introduce Styler to Easterman. It's critics who kill writers, never the other way round." Poor Horowitz seems to be digging his own grave! Will Hawthorne rescue him or hang him out to dry? Halleman, Caroline (23 July 2020). "Anthony Horowitz's bestselling novel is being adapted for Masterpiece PBS". Town & Country . Retrieved 6 August 2020.

Tropes:

Anthony Horowitz’s Mindgame comes to the Ambassadors Theatre for 3 weeks only from 15 May. following a critically acclaimed UK tour. Kensington Gore: Anthony uses this exact phrase to describe the bag of fake blood that Sky Palmer wears under her uniform, which is supposed to burst when she's stabbed at the end of Act I. His new play 'Mindgame' is about to open at London's Vaudeville theatre, and on opening night, Sunday Times critic Harriet Throsby gives the play a savage review. After concluding the third book with ex-detective Daniel Hawthorne, novelist Anthony Horowitz decides he’s had his fill of his partner-in-crime and ends their collaboration. To be honest, Anthony’s focus is now on his play, Mindgame, which is about to debut to London’s West End at the Vaudeville Theatre.

Horowitz and Hawthorne’s bromance is officially over – kaput, terminated, canceled, executed at dawn. Or, is it? Horowitz, Anthony, 1955–". Library of Congress . Retrieved 1 May 2015. Funny, addictive and clever, and the crime fighting duo of Hawthorne and Horowitz are as entertaining as ever. Brilliant. I can't wait for more.' Adam Handy So, maybe it sounds like I'm not giving this a perfectly glowing review but the truth is that I had a ball listening to this one regardless of any minor complaints I had.

Hawthorne has pulled a switcheroo and he's only gotten his little friend to clog the computer system because the DNA results (or whatever) will actually CLEAR Anthony. Horowitz began his most famous and successful series in the new millennium with the Alex Rider novels. These books are about a 14-year-old boy becoming a spy, a member of the British Secret Service branch MI6. As of 2021, there are eleven books where Alex Rider is the protagonist, and another connected to the Alex Rider series: Stormbreaker (2000), Point Blanc (2001), Skeleton Key (2002), Eagle Strike (2003), Scorpia (2004) Ark Angel (2005), Snakehead (2007), Crocodile Tears (2009), Scorpia Rising (2011), plus Russian Roulette (2013). [27] Horowitz had stated that Scorpia Rising was to be the last book in the Alex Rider series prior to writing Russian Roulette about the life of Yassen Gregorovich, [28] but he has returned to the series with Never Say Die (2017), Nightshade (2020) and Nightshade Revenge (2023). However, this is a minor criticism. As Pink Floyd’s “Brain Damage” played at the end, I had to admit it’s one of the most fascinating evenings I’ve had in a theatre for a long time. [23] Some similarities were made between this book and J K Rowling's newer Harry Potter series, but Horowitz did not choose to take action because of this. It delves into the darkest psyche of the human condition of sociopaths and their dissociative behaviour. It challenges you to question, who should you believe? Ordinarily, such a crazy play would receive an insanely great review, but there are problems. At more than two hours, "Mindgame" is too long, and the intermission breaks up the threads of suspense. Horowitz really needs to speed up the roller-coaster climb and get to the punch lines faster -- a bit of dialogue tightening would make a big difference.

Moreover, Horowitz points out, "I can't write another book about you. You're not working on any new cases." But that's about to change. But soon he discovers that nothing is what it seems. Who is the mysterious Borson? Where did he get the meat in the fridge? And why isn’t the skeleton in the closet? Can Hawthorne now help prove Horowitz’s innocence of murder? Now, why would this be an annoyance or something to appreciate? (Come on, how many authors accuse themselves of murder in a story? Let alone depend upon a character to get them out of a jam!)
