About this deal

Jennings plans to report on a mathematical comparison of TV aerials in rural (Linbury) and urban (Dunhambury) locations - but gets distracted with the care of Old Sleepy, the top secret hedgehog. It seems to me you did have some awareness and understanding of the scale of the operation and you were both well at it by the time the police became involved.” Spend the day at Calke Abbey National Trust Estate House and Gardens which includes woodland walks and a deer park

The Jennings books are an absolute joy to read, providing a hilarious window into the mind of a lively group of 10 year old boys. Though no date is given, they appear to be set in the 1950s, and the ridiculous old-fashioned slang and pre-decimel currency is all part of their charm. Whatever you do, don't be tempted to buy a copy of the "updated" version released a few years ago - you'd be missing out on half the fun. During the nine months of the conspiracy, known to drug users and the gang as the AT line, the prosecution estimated just short of 3kg of the substance was sold on the streets. retitled Jennings Unlimited when re-published in 1993 to avoid confusion with the 1980 stage show of the same name) Jennings and Darbishire set up their own newspaper, the Form Three Times, have a confusing chat with some French sailors, accidentally set a photography developing dish on fire, try a spot of fishing - down Old Wilkie's chimney - and get lost in the environs of Pottlewhistle Halt. Old Wilkie's sister comes to their rescue when Venables makes a ghastly bish, and gives them a scoop about Old Wilkie's sporting past.Anchor Church caves - A natural historic beauty spot with an ancient gory legend, also heralded as one of the UK's top ten wild swimming spots!

After World War II, he wrote a series of radio plays for the BBC's Children's Hour chronicling the exploits of Jennings and his rather more staid friend, Darbishire. 'Jennings Learns the Ropes', the first of his radio plays, was broadcast on 16 October 1948. And then in 1950, the first of 26 Jennings novels, 'Jennings Goes to School' was published. In this first book, we follow Jennings as he arrives at Linbury Court for the first time, is installed in Dormitory 4 with his new cronies, and begins to get to grips with the peculiar world of the English prep school. Jennings and Derbishire's adventures over the course of their first term include a daring bid for escape, a call to the fire brigade for assistance during a fire drill and a possibly poisonous spider let loose in the dormitory. Farmer Jim and Mrs Arrowsmith – owners of a farm adjoining the school grounds. Both are generally easy-going and supportive of the school's activities, but do occasionally get annoyed when their lives are adversely affected by the boys' antics. Dr Basil Featherstonehaugh Hipkin – an absent-minded zoologist who meets Jennings and Darbishire when they accidentally push him into the river while they are on an illicit boating expedition. One “authority” even dismissed the Jennings stories as “of no literary merit”.“You addle-pated clodpole,” as Jennings might say. The most important thing is that children enjoy the experience and that it engages their imaginations. A recent reading of my 1960 first edition of Jennings As Usual, shows an author remarkably sensitive to the quirks and enthusiasms of 11-year-old boys. I have met his characters in real life many times, although none has exclaimed: “Fossilised fish-hooks!” Despite his problems, Jennings has never been away. The Jennings stories were my absolute favourite reads when I was eight or nine years old, and it was a red letter day indeed whenever I came across a new one in the town library. Revisiting one's childhood favourites can be a risky business, so it was with real pleasure that I discovered how well this one stood up.

PC Herbert Honeyball – Linbury's gruff but kind-hearted village policeman, who has more than once had wearying encounters with Jennings and his classmates. Getting there

After marrying his first wife, Sylvia Brown, he enrolled at University College London where he involved himself in Socialist and anti-war groups and he was later to become an active member of CND. Unfortunately at university he did not take a degree after failing Latin. He used to tell his pupils stories about the fictional character Jennings, who was based on an old school chum of his, Diarmid Jennings. Diarmid was a prep schoolboy boarding at Linbury Court Preparatory School, where the headmaster was Mr Pemberton-Oakes. Some librarians have described the Jennings books as elitist, presumably because they are set in a prep school, and most of the pundits who have written about children's books have found little value in them. John Rowe Townsend, for example, in Written For Children, dismisses them as "extremely popular, if of no great literary merit". I totally loved the adventures of John Christopher Timothy Jennings when I was young, and on a recent reread this book managed a rare feat - rather than my jaded adult sensibilities seeing flaws I hadn't originally noticed, I actually found it funnier than on first reading. To criticise Jennings for being irrelevant to the lives of most children is silly and patronising. The joy and purpose of fiction is to introduce us to worlds and ideas beyond our personal experience. Classic children’s novels like Robert Westall’s The Machine Gunners (wartime Tyneside) or Leon Garfield’s Smith (18th century London) inhabit worlds far removed from that of the modern child.

Mr and Mrs Lumley – She runs the local cafe and is renowned for her excellent cakes and doughnuts, while her husband is less renowned as a repairer of bicycles. Noted for the sign outside the shop: "Home-made cakes and bicycles repaired". Sweeting, Adam (14 November 2008). "Mitch Mitchell". The Guardian. ISSN 0261-3077 . Retrieved 9 August 2023. He also wrote five novels featuring a north London Grammar School boy, Rex Milligan, one other novel, 'A Funny Thing Happened: The First [and only] Adventure of the Blighs' (1953), wrote a collection of short stories, 'Stories for Boys' (1957), his autobiography, 'While I Remember' (1999) and edited an anthology, 'In and Out of School' (1958).The pair have been caged for four years for conspiracy to supply cocaine. The pair were jailed for their roles in a 'Deliveroo'-style cocaine operation which saw a Midlands gang flood the region with the class A drug. When I was 11 I did not know that someone like me, from a council house and an ordinary primary school, was supposed to be alienated by Jennings. I enjoyed the stories. They were easy to read and amusing. Unlike Billy Bunter and his chums at Greyfriars, Jennings did not catch burglars, spies or jewel thieves. His troubles arose out of real school life: the search for the missing English jotter, the dormitory scrum after lights out and the unreasonableness of the adult - teacher - world. Sarah Hunt has been jailed for four years for conspiracy to supply cocaine (Image: Derbyshire police) Aunt Angela gives Jennings a bicycle, which leads to a chain of events involving a runaway boat, PC Honeyball, and the Spanish Armada. The Form 3 Natural History Club (Jennings, JCT, Chief Spotter, Frog and Tadpole Dept) threatens to disrupt the smooth running of Linbury Court but its activities are saved by the intervention of a scientific frogman on prizegiving day.
