The GAA have also begun to invest in American college students with university teams springing up at University of Connecticut, Stanford University, UC Berkeley, Purdue University, Indiana University, University of Montana and other schools. On 31 January 2009, the first ever US collegiate hurling match was held between UC Berkeley and Stanford University, organized by the newly formed California Collegiate Gaelic Athletic Association. UC Berkeley won the challenge match by one point, while Stanford won the next two CCGAA matches to win the first collegiate cup competition in the U.S. [34] On Memorial Day Weekend of 2011, the first ever National Collegiate GAA championship was played. The Indiana University Hurling Club won all matches of the tournament, and won by four points in the championship final to be crowned the first ever U.S. National Collegiate Champions. Today the sport survives only in two communities: St Columb Major, where the traditional hurling matches are played on Shrove Tuesday and the second Saturday following, between the Townsmen and the Countrymen of the parish; and in St Ives, where a hurling game is played by children on Feast Monday. In addition, a version of hurling features in the beating of the bounds festivities at Bodmin roughly every five years. Although the custom attracts fewer spectators, the annual hurling matches at St Columb Major have similar status in the Cornish calendar to the 'Obby 'Oss festival at Padstow and the Furry Dance at Helston in that all three are unique customs that have survived unchanged and have taken place annually since before records began.

In Ireland, four different codes are played. Traditionally, the domestic 60x30 code (referring to the court size) is played with a smaller rubber softball. Hardball is also played in this court size, but with a much harder ball. The only international codes played in Ireland are the 1-Wall and 4-Wall versions. Gaelic Handball: Team Structure Once Loughnane bought into the project, it brought a whole new energy to Ó Cualáin’s film. “Ger is one of the pillars of hurling,” he says. “If he is involved in the project, it convinces a lot more Irish people to care about the connection between the sports.” Provided that a player has at least one foot on the ground, he may make a shoulder-to-shoulder charge on an opponent who is in possession of the ball or is playing the ball, or when both players are moving in the direction of the ball.

The matches at St Columb and St Ives, and the game played as part of the beating the bounds ceremony at Bodmin [19] are the only instances of the sport today. In 1904, it was showcased as an exhibition sport at the Olympic Games, but the sport is yet to be played competitively at the Olympics. a b c GAA (12 August 2019). The story of hurling begins with Cú Chulainn, son of the god Luch of the Long Hand, a central figure of the Ulster Cycle myths. As a boy, Cú Chulainn was named Sétanta and was raised by his uncle, King Conor of Ulster. Rounders is a game involving a small leather Rounders ball and a rounded bat, played across multiple innings with teams alternating between batting and fielding. Not only is it similar to baseball – it is actually believed to be its ancestor! Hurling is very similar to the game of cnapan; a form of medieval football played until the nineteenth century in the southwestern counties of Wales, especially Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire. [8] [9] George Owen of Henllys (1552–1613) believed cnapan was played by the Celtic Britons. [10] There is circumstantial evidence to support this claim. The Cornish, Welsh and Bretons of Brittany are historically descended from Romano-Britons who inhabited the Roman province of Britannia before the Anglo-Saxons incursions from the 5th century. [11] Puirséil, Pádraig (1984). Scéal na Camógaíochta. Dublin, Ireland: Cumann Camógaíochta na nGael. p.64. On the surface, Gaelic Football and Hurling have some key similarities: they are both played by 15-player teams in the same structure, and they have the same scoring system.

Hurling is administered by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is played throughout the world [ citation needed] and is a fixture of life in many parts of Ireland. Hurling has some popularity among members of the Irish diaspora in North America, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Dubai and Argentina. [1] It has featured regularly in art forms such as film, music and literature. The final of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship was listed in second place by CNN in its "10 sporting events you have to see live", after the Olympic Games and ahead of both the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship. [2] After covering the 1959 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final between Kilkenny and Waterford for BBC Television, English football commentator Kenneth Wolstenholme was moved to describe hurling as his second favourite sport in the world. [3] Alex Ferguson used footage of an All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship final in an attempt to motivate his players during his time as manager of Premier League football club Manchester United. The players winced at the standard of physicality and intensity in which the hurlers engaged. [4] In 2007, Forbes magazine described the media attention and population multiplication of Thurles town ahead of one of the game's annual provincial hurling finals as being "the rough equivalent of 30 million Americans watching a regional lacrosse game". [1] Financial Times columnist Simon Kuper wrote after Stephen Bennett's performance in the 2020 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Final that hurling was "the best sport ever and if the Irish had colonised the world, nobody would ever have heard of football". [5] The largest pitch of any ball game is that of polo, with 12.4 acres… Twice a year in the Parish of St Columb Major, Cornwall, England, a game called hurling (not to be confused with the Irish game) is played on a "pitch" which consists of the entire Parish, approximately 25 square miles (64.7km 2).
