Forced to find a means to survive, Ekko eventually came to live in hiding with a group of other children, building their base in a rare space that housed one of the very few trees—if not the only tree—to survive in Zaun. The group called themselves the Firelights, after the glowing insects found in Zaun, [1] and began sabotaging Silco's shipments of Shimmer in hopes of hindering its damage to their city. Despite losing their parents, Ekko matured into a stable and virtuous adult while Jinx grew into a mad and deranged woman. Ekko’s Childhood Jinx also joined the fight when she saw Vi in danger. Subverting Ekko’s avatar to her own ends, Jinx sent a horde of tiny explosives disguised as firelight bugs. The explosives killed many Piltover enforcers, including the treacherous sheriff. His name could also be a reference to John 'Mikky Ekko' Stephen Sudduth and his first album 'Time' although this has never been confirmed.

His past self would team up with Camille to stop him from detonating the bomb. After beating him, present Ekko manages to talk him down, but the bomb is already armed. However, Future Ekko decides to take the bomb and hurl it through a rift in time and destroy the Syntixi at the cost of his own life. As he hurdles through time and space, Ekko sees the multiverse. In one timeline, he sees his parents have decided to stay in Zaun and steps through, hoping his past self forgives him.
For example, he wanted to delay releasing some advances of Hextech to a later date. According to that schedule, their creator might be dead by their release, and many people would have needlessly suffered through problems that could have been solved by Hex Tech. Ekko put Vi on the trail of Jayce Talis in Arcane, which led to the attempted burglary of his penthouse, the resulting explosion, and renewal of the Piltover/Undercity conflict.

Ekko’s R ability, Chronobreak, causes an afterimage to tail Ekko and when activated, teleports Ekko to that afterimage, healing himself and dealing damage around the afterimage location. One night, on a solo trek into the rubble of a recently demolished laboratory, Ekko made an astonishing find: a shard of blue-green crystal that glittered with magical energy. Every child of Zaun heard tales of hextech, said to power weapons and heroes alike. Such a thing had the potential to change the world, and now he held a broken one. He scrambled to find more pieces, but the crunching footfalls of teched-up enforcers told him he wasn’t the only one looking. Ekko barely escaped, and returned to his home. Ekko and friends belong to a gang called the Lost Children of Zaun, a group of orphans and teenagers drawn together by their mutual interests and desire for community.
